1/48th German Schwimmwagen Type 166

by: Mary Langley [ TANKYSGAL1 ]

History
The Schwimmwagen was first produced during the summer of 1942 and was designed by Dr. Ferdinand Porsche. It was used for the purpose of both reconnaissance and liaison duties across all fronts. During the years of 1942 till 1944, more than 14,000 Schwimmwagens were produced.

The Box
The kit comes in a typical rectangular cardboard box that is illustrated nicely showing two different paint schemes. The outside back of the box also contains a mini history of the schwimmwagen.
Inside the Box
Upon opening the box, you will find two dark yellow plastic sprues, one clear plastic sprue containing the windshield, a decal sheet, and a set of instructions.
The instructions sheet contains a brief history of the schwimmwagen, color chart, list of tools needed, and illustrations with some text on each step of assembly. You will also find a markings guide showing two different options.
On the sprues you will find a total of 52 plastic parts. The pieces show extremely good detail given the scale. There appears to be very little clean up of the parts needed, with the main clean up job being where the part is removed from the sprue.
The decal sheet is a wet transfer sheet, and contains decals that will allow for one of two different markings. One being the 348th Tank Destroyer Battalion, Infantry Division, Spring 1944, the other being the Panzer-Grenadier Division, Gross Deutschland, Russia, March 1944
Conclusion
Overall I feel this kit will make an excellent build. The instructions are clear and can easily be followed by most any level of modeler. Even a beginner.
