Balaton is to release a new 1/35 van, the Barkas B1000. A civil vehicle, that was widely used by RDA Polizei.
Only the box art and a photo of the first cast, not yet complete, have been shown. The resin kit, with photo etch details, will include decals for the German and Hungarian versions

The B1000 was a remarkable van at the time; the unusually high loading capacity, two-stroke engine, front wheel drive and semi trailing arms suspension differed from the more traditionally constructed vans in the West. Being the only commercially available van in the GDR the factory offered many body styles; a flatbed, a panel van, a people carrier, a box van and an ambulance were all available.

Over 175.000 vehicles were produced from 1961 to 1991, mostly for public service.

A little too early for my time. Had it been a mid-eighties model, I could certainly tell you what it looked like - from the inside. Too many adventures on that damned Katana...

You know, this just might be the answer to add a little character and colour to dioramas: say a scenario of liaison with Soviet Traffic Regulators shepherding some Soviet armour - including a MAZ tank transporter perhaps? Or perhaps fruitlessly in pursuit of an Allied Military Liaison vehicle - BRIXMIS, USMLM, FMLM perhaps? (you'd have to identify/scratch some suitable Allied vehicles mind). Just some thoughts - and of course some donor figures would be required and a fair bit of research - I know next to nothing about police uniforms in the GDR - but not beyond the realms of possibility. I might just get one of these!

Maybe you need Michael Caine or Richard Burton in a raincoat, smoking a fag, on a rain soaked street, somewhere near the Wall...

Ah, my Cold War - I miss it so! Shades too of Smiley's People (John le Carre),- even the film "Spy Game". Do we also need 1:35 Trabants?

I think it's time for me to watch again One, Two, Three from Billy Wilder... My favorite cold war movie. Or I could say my favorite movie!
