Tamiya has shown at he Nuremberg Toy Fair their new releases, including two armour kits: A French AMX-13 and a German M109A3G.
We have received some updated information for these releases. This is direct from Tamiya.

35349 1/35 French Light Tank AMX-13
Availability: April 2016
MSRP: $56.00

This is a 1/35 scale model recreating the French AMX-13 light tank. The tank employed an oscillating turret, which was made of two halves, with the gun fitted to the upper half. When it fired, the whole upper half recoiled. This design helped facilitate the AMX-13's auto-loader. The tank was produced over the period 1952-1987, and exported to a number of other countries' militaries, in addition to its use by French forces. Different variants were produced, including 75, 90mm gun, 105mm gun and anti-tank missile AMX-13s.

The Tamiya model captures all of the details seen on the actual subject, including rubber tracks which depict realistic rubber pads.

Specifications

  • 1/35 scale plastic model assembly kit.
  • Length: 183mm, width: 72mm.
  • The oscillating turret is beautifully captured with 75mm gun, and features representations of different surface textures.
  • The model can be assembled with the gun and turret in different elevations.
  • Realistic belt-type tracks realistically depict rubber pads.
  • Comes with a commander torso figure for use in the cupola, plus two marking options.
  • Poly caps are embedded in wheel parts to allow rotation.

37022 1/35 German Bundeswehr Self-Propelled Howitzer M109A3G
Availability: March 2016
MSRP: $56.00

This is a model of the German Bundeswehr Self-Propelled Howitzer M109A3G. It is a collaborative release by Italeri and Tamiya. The M109A3G-specific parts are made by Tamiya and Italeri. The kit has new and updated parts, plus Tamiya figures, decals and instruction manual.
Design work on the actual U.S. M109 began in 1952; eventually, the self-propelled Howitzer served 26 militaries, including the German Bundeswehr’s M109G, which had its own track and cupola design, plus smoke dischargers, turret rear storage boxes and panoramic telescope. Replacing the 155mm gun with the FH70 barrel improved range by over 30% to 24.7km; the M109A3G served until 2007.

Specifications

  • 1/35 scale plastic model assembly kit.
  • Vehicle parts are a product of Italeri.
  • Using the original M109 kit as a base, this model accurately captures M109A3G-specific features such as the cupola, smoke dischargers, storage boxes and FH70 gun.
  • Moldings have been sharpened up to depict previously missing or unclear features such as the panoramic telescope, and to give a better parts fit.
  • Drive sprocket center caps are now captured by new, separate parts.
  • Tracks accurately depict Bundeswehr parts and now use cement- and paintable material.
  • Tamiya commander and gunner figures are included, with new base from Italeri.
  • 2 Tamiya marking options and a new Tamiya instruction manual are included.

AFAIK the M109A3G is a straight rebox of the old Revell kit. LINK This was the Italeri kit with some additional Italeri-tooled parts for the German boxing. So the 'new' parts have been seen before, but not under the Italeri label. EDIT: I guess the crew are Tamiya parts.

Nope, not really. I have seen the "new tool" parts in the other M109 releases and am not impressed. I'll stick with AFV Club's excellent M109s and can convert them into any other version I may want.

OOOH!OOOH! Here's some completely useless tank trivia! Out at the Grafenwohr(Graf-en-veer) ranges there were some derelict AMX13s laying around before they were towed into the firing lanes for use as hard targets. I took the opportunity to inspect it. T&E was removed as was the manual cycling drive for the gun, but it had room for plenty of 75 ammo. The feed was a complicated mechanism, and ammo was cycled from two side-by-side 6 or 7 round cylindrical racks. The chosen round then traveled on a multi-part(flexible) pathway to the breechblock. Elegant, but the whole thing was unshielded and very dangerous looking; I didn't see any guards or mounting spots for them on the assembly. And, for those who are curious, the real vehicle is as devoid of any real detail as the kits' parts appear. I took a pic in the 70s, stuffed in one of my ammo cans....

The AMX has been pushed back to May.
JAN 29, 2016 - 04:40 PM
I like the AMX-13.
JAN 29, 2016 - 07:01 PM
why does Tamiya rebox all those low grade Italeri kits?
JAN 29, 2016 - 07:33 PM
Because it's inexpensive for them and the Tamiya name sells kits in Asia?
JAN 29, 2016 - 08:08 PM
AFAIK this is the best image of Tamiya's AMX-13 out there, apparently taken at their head office: LINK Looking at the parts layout in Nuremberg, it appears to have a pre-cut PE grille for the radial cooling fan.
JAN 30, 2016 - 07:35 AM
The circular grille is nice but I fear Tamiya do not give the four rectangular ones. I haven't seen any of them on the model displayed at Nuremberg. They'll probably sell them as a separate set.
