The mighty German Kingtiger tank has always been immensely popular with modelers, so Dragon is offering another variant from the ‘big cat’ family. It’s a 1/35 scale kit of a Kingtiger with a Henschel turret., specially configured to represent a tank fighting in the Ardennes in 1944-45
While this 1/35 scale kit is a refined version of what has been available before, a key change is the unique Kgs 73/800/152 tracks. The running gear also comes with appropriate 18-tooth drive sprockets matching the tracks.

The Kingtiger’s turret and upper hull have also been slightly refined as well. Additionally, there is a generous array of photo-etched partss.

This kit thus offers a convenient way for modelers to create a Kingtiger ready to thunder through the wintry Ardennes forest in 1944-45, when Germany launched a major counteroffensive that became known as the Battle of the Bulge.

I'll buy one just because I can. And for the box art.

Dragon released this version before, though they are saying they've improved some parts. However, these tanks all had Zimmerit, and judging from the illustration, it appears that Dragon is not planning to use the Zimmerit hull and turret parts on this release. The 506th Battalion tanks, which included a small batch completed with the experimental, single-link track, were delivered before the Zimmerit coating was banned (as a suspected fire hazard) in September, 1944. The battalion lost about a third of its tanks in the autumn fighting around Aachen, and was brought up to strength for the Ardennes operation with new tanks that did not have the Zimmerit coating. However, these tanks had the conventional double-link track and nine-tooth drive sprockets. The single-link track was a success, but stocks of the old track had to be used up first, so tanks with the new track did not reappear until March, 1945.

Interesting. I don't mind not having Zim if I can get the Atak one.

Funny, earlier releases of this kit also offered that track & drive sprocket combo so I'm left wondering if this is a re-release or what makes it different. Not that I'm not interested, mind you, just want to be better informed.
