There are some great books out there on modeling techniques. However many are simply too expensive for younger modelers to buy. Here's a new, 'Low-Cost' intiative from Xtreme Modelling which should be welcome to ALL groups of modelers.
Xtreme Modelling, publishers of some extremely useful guides to a variety of techniques have just announced the first of a New series - the Black Star handbooks. The first will be:

Advanced Painting Techniques is written by Rubén González and consists of 32 pages in A5 Format..

From the Publisher: In this handbook Rubén show all the weathering techniques for military vehicles, over two base colours - dark yellow and panzer grey simultaneously in the same model. In Ruben’s own words, the techniques he uses are not innovative but what is innovative is the way to present them.

The many finishing techniques covered are:

Filters
Washes
Chipping
Mapping
Dust
Stains of oil, grease and fuel

The medias used are:

Acrylic paints
Enamels
Oils
Pigments
Varnishes
Graphite

As I mentioned in the introduction, one of the selling-points for this new series will be the price, each handbook will retail at 4.50€.

I believe they will. So far they've had an excellent track record with editing and I don't believe this will be any kind of exception. At this price where are you going to go wrong?

Sounds like something I might be interested in here in the states. I wish however that more of these "how to" publications would also show these same techniques for us modern armor fans and do so on camoflage schemes etc. It seems so much is available for weather Panzer Grey, Yellow, and green, not much for working with modern colors and camo patterns. Just my 2 cents....maybe someone out there knows of something I missed.

Blucop, I haven't seen this particular manual yet but generally speaking the same methods used to weather a single-color scheme can also be done with a camo scheme. The difference is that you have to be more targeted with the individual colors depending on how large the patches are that you have incorporated into the scheme. Showing a contrast in this manual between a light color and a dark color looks like a great innovation to me as it shows you the ends of the spectrum and you finetune between the two depending on the other colors you are using and the application of the different methods.

Well, I placed an order to see how good this mini-mag is (seems pretty nice). Hey, it's only $12.23 shipped to the US so it certainly was cheap. Will report back once it gets here.... Rob

Blucop, The beauty of weathering methods is that, depending on which ones you adopt, they almost always are targeted to achieve a specific look/feel to the area on the model in question as opposed to a "general" overall effect. By applying the same techniques but using different shades of coloration for example, you can apply the same effect to different colors quite easily. It all ultimately boils down to what you want to achieve and the materials used, but the techniques themselves are not limited to just single color schemes. HTH.
