Squadron Signal Publications have sent us details of the latest in their excellent 'Walk-Around' series
SS5720 - M3A1 WHITE SCOUT CAR WALK AROUND

Written by David Doyle and following the usual format for this series, the book consists of 80 pages, more than 200 photos and a series of color profiles.

Here are some additional details on the book:

The White Motor Company began serial production of the four-wheel-drive M3A1 Scout Car in 1940. Covered in quarter-inch face-hardened armor, the vehicle served the US military as scout, command car, ambulance and in some cases as a gun tractor. Armed with one .50 caliber and two .30 caliber machine guns on a skate rail that completely surrounded the fighting compartment, the M3A1 saw action in the Philippine tropics, the North African desert and during the 1943 invasion of Sicily. However, US forces soon replaced the open-topped M3A1 with other armored vehicles that afforded better coverage. The vehicle was widely exported and was heavily used by the Red Army on the Eastern Front, by the Free French, Belgian, Czechoslovak and Polish forces throughout WWII. Later, France took the vehicle into combat during its colonial wars in Indochina and Algeria.

Available NOW from the usual outlets.

I'm a bit biased as I have a couple of photos in the book. That being said, I received my copy from David Doyle on Friday and it's a real nice book. It covers early and late production types. The nice and clear detail photos throughout the book will provide much help if your working on the old M3A1 Scout Car kit. Chris "toadman" Hughes Toadman's Tank Pictures

Hi Chris Can you tell me if there is anything on the Whites used by the Dutch in the East Indies (before and after WWII)? Thanks Dave.

Hi Dave, No, nothing of the sort. Since it's a "Walk Around" it features photos almost exclusively of collector/museum owned vehicles. No wartime shots are included. Chris "toadman" Hughes Toadman's Tank Pictures

Thanks for your kind words Chris! And thanks for your help with the photos as well. As Chris mentioned - in this book I do not explore at all the combat (and non-combat) use of these vehicles. Rather, we climb around, over and under the M3A1, both early and late. Coverage is provided regarding the different types of skate rails, wheels, radio installations, engine compartment layouts of early and late series scout cars, as well as the overall details of scout car construction common to all M3A1. Hope this helps! Best wishes, David Doyle
