Introduction

My first touch with Viriatus Miniatures, was reviewing in here, the “Christ of the Trenches” figure. I then painted it and got a certificate in Athens Star Show competition 2005. It was one of the most pleasingly painting figures and one I will always remember.
Then here I have under scope another one that already provokes me to paint.
Remexido – Popular guerrilla against liberalism. Algarve 1838. Ref. 54F007

One thing that amazes me with Viriatus miniatures, now that I have closest encounter with them, and have browsed carefully their catalogue, is that all of them have to tell a story, of existing person, that played a role in Portuguese history. In this way I think u become more connected to the theme u paint. It’s not another knight, or another WII German, but well it’s Remexido!

Historical Notes

  • Notes from Viriatus Site

This figure represents Remexido, who was the Miguelista Guerrilla commander during the Portuguese Liberal and Civil wars, just before his capture by Captain Cabral on July 28th, 1838. Colonel Fontoura organised a military expedition with columns of infantry and cavalry and surprised over 200 guerrillas in Portela da Corte das Velhas. Remexido and his guerrillas lived like ‘wolves’ in the mountains of Algarve. He is dressed with a civilian jacket and cavalry trousers with leather stripping. Hanging from his shoulder, he carries a gourd as a waterbottle, a provision bag and a cavalry pouch. He his armed with a British Dragoon pistol, a British Paget cavalry carbine and a British light cavalry sword, 1796 pattern.

    The kit

Classic hard carton box with inside foam protection holds safely all 12 white metal pieces of the figure.

This carton box is inside an outer thinner carton box that shows the box art figure painted by Paulo Gago, which also has done the sculpture on this one.

In the box, is also included a 6 page leaflet that holds historical notes on the figure, reference information, 3 different pictures of the painted figure and a detailed color chart for every piece, with Vallejo acrylics numbers references.

  • Pieces

  • Head This is my favorite part of the figure. A long beard and almost Biblical face of Remexido is a distinctive character to paint

  • Torso with Feet saves some time for getting parts together and shows a tall and thin figure of the guerrilla. A dragoon pistol lies under his belt

  • Sword British Light Cavalry Sword with detailed parts for hanging on laces

  • Right Arm

  • Left Arm

  • A small gourd as a water bottle

  • Left hand holding hat

  • Right hand holding a British Paget cavalry carbine

  • Provision Bag

  • Cavalry pouch

  • Metal holder small piece

  • Round base with part of tree stump and nicely sculpted tree roots on surface

    Quality and Detail

This is the second figure of Viriatus that I lay hands on. I have to mention that they are made in only 200 pieces each. So this limited production makes them even more precious. My copy is 32/200. The white metal quality is very high, and the casting is in superb level. I tried to find some flaws or problems, but I couldn’t even find standard mold lines to clean! So figure-by-figure I guess well have to put Viriatus in the High Quality Figure Manufacturers.

So to enhance the already good material u will just to need a soft touch with fine wire wool, to polish the metal. Then some washing in bath with a mild detergent – water mix to make it as clean as it gets before priming.

Sculpted Detail is more than crisp and clear. All parts are nicely detailed and all folds and creases will ask for careful painting to have a nice result with the proper degradation in all shadows and highlights

    Painting

I wouldn’t put this one in the so-called “hard to paint” figures. But its not also an easy one since it represents a person that existed in life! More than this there are a lot of cloth folds to work on, so u have to be patient.

Color combinations are standard since he wears specific clothing and the table that Viriatus suggests will be of some help I think

Try to give the time that is demanded to that spectacular face to bring out the character of the guerrilla and to paint in detail his flesh and facial hair.

The two colored pants will be of some notice when finished and also all other smaller details like pistol, sword, water bottle and the rest.

I will paint this one for sure in my “soon to do” list, and the only alternation I plan to do is to enhance a bit the already nicely sculpted base, adding some vegetation elements and something more that might comes in mind

    Conclusion – Final Verdict

In case you are not familiar with Viriatus Miniatures, this one will definitely please u to start with. I can guarantee.

The fact that not many brands produce Portuguese themes, and no other Brand produces so many Portuguese themes(along with other subjects), historically connected with certain persons, and periods , makes Viriatus Miniatures precious to figure painters, that like to have “alternative” subjects in their collection.

    Highly Recommended

    About Costas Rodopoulos (Major_Goose)
    FROM: KIKLADHES, GREECE / Ελλάδα

I started modelling 27 years ago with some 1/72 planes and military vehicles. Soon the diorama bug got into me and with Sheperd Paynes books I dug in. I loved to build dioramas and military vehicles till the Vietnam Era. I don't like modern stuff so much. 4 years ago I had a crush on figure painti...
