Introduction

Once again, PlusModel has introduced another product that diorama modelers have been after for a while. This time they have packaged short tufts of grass and tufts of reed which are now available in separate sets. The idea is not entirely new as products of this type have been around for a few years but the availability has always been somewhat problematic.

Review

The product that we get from PlusModel is simple to use; I used the blunt end of a set of tweezers to 'push' the tuft off of the backing paper. Once off of the paper I could simply place the tuft down onto a spot of white glue and viola instant tufts. The reeds worked the same way, I drilled out a small hole, really more or less just a bit of an indent, plugged it in and was ready to go.

I was using them in a small diorama I threw together to practice working with foam bases that seemed like it would work well. The diorama was a bit on the 'green' side and the dry, brown, tufts seemed out of place so I worked a bit of oil paint into them to add some green color. The oils worked great, as I assume other mediums would as well, to change the color or tone of the tufts or reeds if they don't exactly fit into the foliage you are planning for your work.

I like them, they are incredible easy to work with, they take paint well, and they appear to be pretty sturdy. You get a good number, 49 of the dry tufts of grass, and 18 of the dry reeds and at under 10 bucks it’s a pretty good deal.
SUMMARY
Highs: Good number of tufts, inexpensive, easy to paint, and very simple to use. If you build or create dioramas and can grab a set or two of these you will be happy you did.
Lows: Really, none at all. Inexpensive, easy to use, and they look good too, just no drawbacks at all.
Verdict: Highly recommended.

About Rick Cooper (clovis899)
FROM: CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES

I have been modeling for about 30 years now. Once upon a time in another century I owned my own hobby shop; way more work than it was worth. I tip my opti-visor to those who make a real living at it. Mainly build armor these days but I keep working at figures, planes and the occasional ship.

I remember the good ol' days of snipping paintbrush bristles and plopping them into a gob of glue. Glad those days are gone! These look very good.

I like these. Last 'grass' I tried to 'plant' was horsehair or something like that. Very annoying watching it fall to the demands of gravity while I was waiting for the glue to set.
