During the WW2 the Germans had several approaches to improve the maneuverability of their tanks in the winter time, Winterketten (winter tracks) being one of those solutions. Developed in 1942 for use in winter conditions on the Eastern Front, Winterketten were basically a normal track with a thin triangular veined blade extension that protruded from the side end of the track. However, the Winterketten track proved flawed under hard use as the extensions could break off into the hinge point causing track failure. A new type of track called Ostketten of the same width but an extra hinge point succeeded Winterketten in the fall and winter of 43-44.
All in Resine offers several different sets of Winterketten in 1/35 scale, available as 3 or 5-link, right or left side track sets. This review covers Winterketten Chain PzKpfw III (Left) (AK5003).
The set is packed in a simple zip-lock bag with a CAD box art image showing the Winterketten track segment, designating the contents as 5 left side track links. The set consists of five 3D printed pieces representing one initial winterketten link with pin and four intermediate links in 1/35 scale. With 5 links, this set is not designed as a full track replacement, but instead as an accessory track section for models.
One of the main drawbacks with 3D printed pieces are printing lines, surface imperfections resulting from the printer adding material to the piece one layer at the time. These can be tedious to clean and the procedure can easily result in fine details getting lost. All in Resine uses state-of-the-art 3D printer with 16 micron per layer resolution, thus reducing printer deficiencies to a minimum. Indeed, the printing lines on these winterketten pieces are miniscule and visible only under high magnification. The tracks fit nicely to one another and can be assembled without using glue in the process.
Closer inspection of the pieces reveals a very complex track shape perfectly delivered. Iím far from being an expert in WW2 tracks, but a quick comparison of these pieces with the reference images shows a very nice and accurate representation of the Winterketten track in scale.
Winterketten Chain PzKpfw III (Left) is a 1/35 scale set consisting of five 3D printed winterketten track links. The shape of the track link is nicely delivered in scale. The print is very good, with minimal printing imperfections. The track assembles easily even without using glue.
Altogether, this set is a welcomed addition for all those modeling WW2 German armor.

You wonder how did this addiction start? I was a kid when my dad broght home a 1/72 Concord airplane; we built it together as well as couple of other airplanes after that. This phase was just pure fun: glue, paint, decals in no particular order... everything was finished in a day or two. Then I disc...
