Centurion Mk. 5/1 Australian Grills

by: John Murcutt [ JLMURC ]

Introduction
With most model kits the engine grills are often overlooked and even with the most modern of moulding methods cannot be replicated in a manner that does justice to the real item. As they are often flush or partially hidden from view, there is not the same amount of detail given as is represented on areas that are readily visible to the naked eye. The quality of this update set will add the intricate detail that was found on the Centurion Mk. 5/1 as used by the Australian forces.

The Contents
The set is presented in the usual Eduard re-sealable plastic envelope, with the frets being protected by enclosed cardboard backing sections. Upon removing the contents, the detail set comprises 2 frets of photo-etch, and a single folded A4 sheet, printed on both side of assembly instructions.

The instructions are clearly presented with pictures of the both frets and a colour coded key which explains the modifications marks that are given alongside the construction notes. In following Eduard’s instructions the following sequence is given:
1 - This side deals with the preparation of the kit parts and the addition of the base frame that will hold the completed grills.
2 - The reverse sheet concentrates on the construction and mounting of the delicate inner grills along with the external units that cover the area on the top and bottom of the hull.

In Detail
Construction is dealt with in the usual logical manner that Eduard kits are presented in. These parts will benefit from very careful building as each grill has to be built from individual components, ensuring that you keep each part square. Each of the grills has a pre-cut slot which assists in keeping each segment in the correct position and so makes the task slightly less difficult.

With a little care and preparation I see no real difficulty in having a good result once finished and should respond well to thin instant glue being run into each joint.

in Conclusion
The transformation that will be achieved by using this set over that offered in the actual kit will be superb, the final result will be an excellent representation of the real item. I think that once you have added the completed parts, you should feel a high degree of satisfaction in the scale effect that is offered.

SUMMARY
This set replaces the simple representation of the grills that were fitted to the Australian Centurion Mk. 5/1.Once fitted this will add a superb touch of realism to an area that stand out, when examining the rear of the model.

I do build some aircraft and other distractions but get pulled back to German Vehicles due to the variation i...
