Retreat From Tskhinvali
Tskhinvali, the capital of South Ossettia, was the focus of the only major battle of the Georgian/Russian war which lasted from 07 to 16 August 2008. Georgian troops attacked Tskhinvali on 08 august, but determined resistance from the defending South Ossettian army prevented the complete fall of the city. Advancing Russian forces from the South Caucasus based 58th Army joined up with the city's defenders and launched a counter-attack, which after 2 days of heavy fighting forced the Georgian troops out the city. The war finally ended on the 16th of august with the end result that Georgia lost South Ossettia and parts of Abkhazia. This diorama depicts a Russian 9k33 (NATO SA8 Gecko) with some escorting infantry inspecting a hurriedly abandoned Georgian army D30 howitzer on the rural outskirts of the city. One of the Russian troops questions a local farmer for any useful information about any Georgian forces in the area. Both Trumpeter's SA8 and D30 were built OTB, with figures from Master Box, MasterClub and Djiti.
