Hi, I've recently bought the Dragon FlaK 36 model and was mightily impressed with the detail. While researching a little about it's history, I read that it was mainly towed around by the Sd.Kfz.7. I've found a nice site with quite a few photos of the Sd.Kfz.7, but I was wondering if anyone had any other useful websites or could point me in the direction of a book with some good reference pictures and information. Also, I think that the Sd.Kfz.7 was used in North Africa ( for example), but can anyone confirm if it towed 88s there as well? Ok, with those out of the way... What options are there for modelling the Sd.Kfz.7? Short of a scratch build, is the Tamiya kit the only real option or are there other kits out there (or even any rumoured plans for one)? As the Tamiya kit is 30+ years old, I guess it will need a little love to match the detail on the FlaK 36. After looking at this build blog and this finished model (over at Missing Lynx) I gather that there are quite a few after market products that would enhance the model. So far I've found the following specific kits: Eduard PE set Sd.Kfz.7 1/35 (Part number 35105)Eduard PE set Sd.Kfz.7 tool box 1/35 (Part number 35106)Fruilmodel sprocket and tracks (part number ALT24)Model Kasten road wheels (Part number MDKK-20)Signifer front drive train and wheels (Part number SN35005)Tank Workshop Sdkfz 7 Front Wheels (Part number TWS2040)Tank Workshop SdKfz 7 Wheels w/ Civilian Tires (Part number TWS2047)On top of these there are also generic stowage and small arms that could be added. Is anyone aware of anything else that is available or of any specific inaccuracies / missing details with the model that would need addressing? Also, would it be worth getting any or all of these kits for the model? I guess that they won't be detrimental to the model, but does the cost justify the improvement? Confused as always, so any and all feedback most welcome! Cheers, Ian |

Hi Ian, yes, the Sdkfz 7 was used in N Africa for towing the 88's, a couple of good books are by Concord on the DAK both have good pics in. Basically in 1/35 the only option is the Tamiya kit, yes its 30 odd years old but is generally accurate, the weakest areas being the front suspension/wheels and the tracks/wheels and possibly the cab, the eduard PE set will help a lot as will the MK wheel/track set, for the front wheels the signifier set would sort out the issues there, one other thing to add would be the width marker poles for the front fenders, I think Lion Roar or Armorscale make those, with that lot you should be able to make a damn good looking build. |

hey, this is the site that help us ,during our builds.pretty decent, and at the bottom is a tab for the gallery.but it's not in english. http://panzerkeil.dre.hu/harcjarm/spw/sdkfz7/sdkfz7.htm and it did tow the Flak 18/36/37 in Afrika. http://www.go2war2.nl/picture.asp?pictureid=1594 http://www.lanthrax.com/news_details.asp?NewsID=00712as far as building it.Tamiya is the only SdKfz 7 available, and would at least recommend replacing the front wheels, and others here ,have suggested replacing the tracks, apparently ,there inaccurate ,even with the model being 30+ yrs old,it's still quite enjoyable to build,OOB,if you dont have the funds to purchase the extra goodies for it. R&J ( http://www.rjproducts.com/) has some nice front tires in different seasons, including Fall, Winter and Sand. They also stock most of these upgrades. Quoted Text

LOL, that's the $64 question! I've got everything but the Friulmodel sprockets on order (figure the Modelkasten upgrade make them unnecessary). The kit is pretty clunky, so I think anything that will improve its looks is worthwhile, but only you can determine whether it's worth the expense. If you get some DAK photos, please share them, as I'm trying to decide between a NA diorama and a Winter one (sand is more forgiving than fake snow). |

Thanks for the info and links, all very useful.
After having had a quick look through the kit it doesn't look like a too complicated build, though there is some detail missing here and there. The fender width marker poles are one obviously one (though it looks like the Eduard PE kit has some -- just need to check how accurate they are), but I think the major omission is an engine! Does anyone know of a suitable part that could be used here? I was thinking of modelling it with the engine cover open, but may have to reconsider that now.
As for the cost vs. results... the extra parts would take up my budget for a couple of months, but as I have quite a stash of models to build this wouldn't be too much on an issue. Given the detail of the FlaK 36, I think it would do that model an injustice not to spec up the mover as much as possible.
Cheers, Ian

Again, R&J has a Maybach engine ($12?) you can order, and Joy is very nice and helpful. Bill |
