Hello everyone,
I just have a quick (I hope) question about how individual vehicles are numbered, I am building a M2A2 and an M1A1, I want them both to be from the 3rd ID. I was looking at a picture of a M2A2 staging in Kuwait and was curious about its numbering system.

On the front right (most likely on the left too...) there is:

3I
3-15I

Could someone decifer it for me?
Thanks and stay safe,
Chris

That's the 3D Infantry Division, 3D Batallion of the 15TH Infantry Regiment.

There is a great feature in ArmoramA on US Vehicle Numbering. World Class by Epi and Sabot!

On the front right (most likely on the left too...) there is:

3I
3-15I

3I=number 3 followed by the capital letter "I" stands for 3rd Infantry Division
3-15I= 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment
"I" means it is an infantry unit, ▲ means it is an armor unit, CAV is cavalry, F is field artillery

The company vehicle bumper number would be on the left front (as sitting in the driver's compartment) and would be a number like:
A-11,-12,-13,-14,-21,-22,-23,-24,-31,-32,-33,-34,-65,-66 and be repeated for B, C and D companies.

Here is the article by Pete and Rob:
Modern US Army Vehicle Markings
Many of the vehicles used by the Third ID in OIF were drawn from perpositioned ordnance stocks. The hull markings on these vehicles are significantly different fron the system presented in the article.

From what I saw the Units didnt have the Typical 3I 3-15INF bumper numbers....instead they used TF 3-15 as the unit desnator since the brigades where spilt into their Combat Teams (IE Inf Company with a M1 Battalion and vis visa with their various assets)
