Hi I like to know how the setup is for a communication center. I mean how are several M577 and Humvee's being positioned and connected to form a commucation center for operations like Desert Storm.
Information I'm looking for is how many M577's are used in what possition to each other
How do Humvee's with com-shelters fit in here?

Photo's are very welcome.

I have 3 M577's and 2 Humvee's with S-250 shelters already, do I need more?

This would depend on the type of unit and the unit's Standing Operating Procedures (SOP, also note it is "standing" and not "standard"). The newer SICUPS (I'm not sure of the spelling of that acronym) that come with M577s or M1068s can configure in a variety of modes.

Sometimes they set up side by side, other times they set up in a "T" or "X" depending on whether there are 2, 3 or 4 tracks (or more). The commo huts normally set up a distance from the TOC. That way the electronic signature of the HMMWV doesn't give away the location of the TOC. It's distance will be based on terrain, amount of cable length and enemy threat level.

Regular command or staff HMMWVs usually park a little ways away from the TOC. The driver will pull up near the TOC, let the officer out, and then park in a designated parking area some distance away. Spreading the vehicles out ensures survival in case of artillery attack.

Rob,

Do you have any photos or drawings of this setup or do you know where to find them?

Never got around to taking any photos of the TOC set up. Can't be in the tourist mode when you work 18-20 hour days in the ops center. When I didn't work there, I tried to spend as little time there and only visited for operations orders and the like. I'll look in some of my FMs to see if there are any diagrams of the set up.
