Gentlemen, hi !!!! This is a double Zvezda project: One Standard Mercedes-Benz L4500 heavy truck and I'm turning another truck MB 4500 in the Mercedes-Maultier version. DISCUSSION ONLY It´s a low cost project and I'm using pieces of scrap: The suspension was donated by an old Panzer II Ausf G Tamiya. But the tracks are horrible!!!! I got a couple of tracks from Tamiya's Wespe from a friend in Germany (Thanks, Lars Richter...) to improve this project ... Now, I´m painting this beast: Dark-yellow with green and brown stripes cammo.... Now, it´s time for the tactical marks !!!! Someone could help me with marks suggestion? I have decal sheet and color laser printer and could make the color and black markings. It is a 4500 Mercedes with quadruple 20mm flak in his back, 1944. Any suggestions of Army (Heer, SS, Luftwaffe..)Unity, Tactical marks and / or divisional marks? Please, if you wish, use the diagram below and make your contribution Thanks in advance !!! |

Yes, but Marcos we'll all remember you as the first to not only build and show this kit here but to do a great conversion on it. I guess as it's low cost project you'll use the Tamiya Flak ? Wouldn't it be great with the Lion Roar jobbie on the back. Thanks for posting, look forward to the next update. All the best Alan |

Marcos, couple of points. Firstly, I hope you consider submitting this as a Feature for the site? The work you've done is extraordinary and really deserves a MUCH bigger shop-window than the Forums. Secondly, at Nuremberg, I spent a lot of time talking to Zvezda. Particularly about the L4500 and their announcement that they are going to do the Maultier. I'm going to send them a link to your work here as i'm pretty sure that they'll be more than interested. As the Maultier is in the development phase, then any pointers they could get on it would be pretty welcome... |

Always a pleasure to see what new odd-ball or unusual subject you will choose Marcos and this one looks like it will be up to your usual standards. Even with the announcement of a future kit yours will still be 100% unique because of the work you've put in with it. |

Marcus, I told you befor "you are rockin' !" Very impressive work. I really like the detailing of the engine, too. I just have some questions: First, you strengthened the chassis and attached the wheels and tracks. Was this educated guesswork or do you have references for that?? I have none, and since I also planned something like this and Zvezda's appearantly coming with one too, it would help us a lot. Second, how did you do that trick with the sprocket? It looks very clean with a perfect fit! Enlighten us, master!! |

Ron, I will answer your questions in the message body ... Quoted Text
I just have some questions: First, you strengthened the chassis and attached the wheels and tracks. Was this educated guesswork or do you have references for that?? I have none, and since I also planned something like this and Zvezda's appearantly coming with one too, it would help us a lot.
I did a "sub-chassis", like the Opel Maultier, to be coupled in the original frame of the truck, which was not changed. Only the support of the rear suspension have been removed ... I used as references this resin kit:

.. and this awesome picture I received from a Brazilian Modeler (Thanks, Augusto ...) that show a 4500 R Maultier destroyed. The details of the rear suspension are visible and the´re amazing:

Second, how did you do that trick with the sprocket? It looks very clean with a perfect fit!
As I say, I used the Panzer I tractor wheel with the rear part of the Sdkfz 250 Airfix tractor wheel. The center was "digged" with mini-lathe.

The transmission device are the rear axis from Zvezda´s truck, using the panzer´s III drive Idler suport (scrap). Fits perfectly !!!

Enlighten us, master!!
[b]put bold text here Thanks, again, Ron...

The week-end progress: The second part of this project: The diesel engine and the radiator and water hoses: The details in the firewall (wires and horn) made with plasticard Comparative picture. The last truck is a Ford V3000 Mautier Making the spare wheel suport: ...and the track sub-chassis complete: Sagging the tracks...The beast almost done !!! I canibalize a Tamiya Wespe kit while the donated tracks not arrive ... For sagging, I use steel wire...A bit of mud will mask this in the final round ... The other side... Rear view: I use balsa wood to make the flak suports: The monster belly: see the exhaust pipe: Cabin close. The windshield protected by tape... The beast is almost complete !!!!! |
