OK Guys, I have my sticky hands on a great model to start my German WW2 armor. The problem is, the only reference I have found says that it was "gray" for the time period I'm looking at. I have resources for Model Master, Tamya, and Humbrol paints. Just need to know the specific 'gray' for a '40-'41 Tiger is? TIA Matt N. |

Tigers were first used in 1942. The gray would be German Grey, or in tamiya, XF-63. |
| Whatever you do, you'll regret it. | | |

The Tiger did not exist in 1940 or 1941. It was built as an antidote to the new generation of Russian tanks encountered after the German invasion in June, 1941. The original paint finish was called Dunkelgrau or dark gray, and most hobby paint manufacturers call it German Gray or Panzer Gray (except for Gunze, who call it Field Gray, a term that should actually refer to the green gray color used for woolen uniforms). When fresh, it was a very dark charcoal gray, but it could be dramatically lightened by even a small amount of road dust. Only small numbers of Dunkelgrau Tigers were issued starting in late 1942 and into early 1943, mainly to the 502nd and 503rd battalions in Russia (and the battalions had to fill out their numbers with Panzer III medium tanks). Tanks issued to the 501st and 504th in Africa were delivered in tropical colors. In February, 1943, German tank plants started to shift over to the new Dunkelgelb (dark yellow) finish, and camouflage patterns were applied in the field using Olivgrun (olive green) and Rotbraun (red brown). Existing tanks were repainted as time and supplies allowed. |
