Thank you for the kind words everyone. I am not using anything special to make the parts, just ordinary hand tools, a dremel and a drill. It just takes time trying to make them look "right".

your grade of detailing is pretty impressive ...

even the hinges of the frontlight-brackets looks 1by1 with the real thing!

might it be possible you have a original willys in your garage?

keep us posted with your progress!

thomas

Thanks Thomas, I wish I had an original in my garage, I would love one. I am doing all this from pictures I found on the web and from ones I have taken at museums and airshows.

makes that whole build even more impressive ...

I just started working on this again after a short break. I will post some updates soon.

Pete - The wing nuts are really simple. I just cut a short piece of tubing and glue on a couple of tabs of styrene. After the glue dries, I cut the tabs to shape. They are not 100% accurate and are not functional, but they are close enough for me.

Wow, it has been a LONG time since I updated this. I didn’t realize how long. I have been making some progress, although not as fast as I would like to.

I got quite a bit done on the dash. The data plates are Paul’s excellent plates. I am anxiously awaiting the updated gauges. I opened the glove box and added the interior and working latch to it. Please ignore the screws on the data plates, I didn’t realize how bad they looked until I saw them in the pictures. I have already made new ones that are all the same size.

The pedals as of now are all functional and move. The gas pedal moves the throttle linkage when it is all hooked up. I am not sure if I will leave it all moving when I do final assembly, but the option is there now.

I modified all the seats, making the passenger and the rear seat foldable. I also added the starter crank (which fits through the hole in the bumper and catches a bar in the crank shaft) and tire pump. There are numerous other details added to the tub. I also opened up the well for the fuel tank and modified the kit tank with longer sides, new seam strips, hold down straps, filler cap, and other details. I also added a drain cap to the bottom of the fuel tank well.
The tool bins were also opened up and have working latches. While researching the tool bins, I found the cover for the trailer electrical connector that goes in the drivers side tool bin and made that. Then I decided to make the trailer electrical connector and hinge the cover. I also decided to add the tail light buckets.

Here are a few overall shots showing the added pieces and modifications.

I found a picture of an 8th Air Force airfield anti-aircraft jeep and decided that is what I am going to make mine as. Of course, the .50cal pedestal, mount and ammo system is completely different. The airfield jeep has a bomber type machine gun mount and the pedestal just looks like they welded some pipe and angle iron to make it. This means that all the work I did previously on this area is no good any more. I will still finish up the old system and make a stand for it to display next to the jeep. I started making the new pedestal and mount basing it on the DML Waist Gunner .50 cal mount. I started with a metal DiD .50 cal aircraft gun, but I was not happy with the barrel so I made a new one out of aluminum and plastic. After getting as far as I have, I am not happy with the metal DiD gun, so I am going to switch it out with a DML one. I will use the barrel I already have and modify the mount to make it work.

That’s all the updates for now, more to come later. I welcome any comments/feedback.

Thanks for looking.

Mark, just my added kudos for your inspiring work to date.

Oh, and by the way I have almost finished my 1/35 scale oil and gas refinery.
As soon as I get it up and running I'll be able to sell you 1/35 scale fuel and oil.

So far the biggest hang up is reducing the 1:1 oil molecules down to the correct size, while marinating faithful scale energy output of the product.

As an aside; if you would be interested in getting in on the ground floor, I can send you a 1/35 scale prospectus, for you consideration.

Hi Mark
I was following your build since months ago, and fortunately I discovered today a new update.
I have been in modeling since 50 years now and from time to time appears a guy like you that say "it's quite simple, just I began adding plastic here and there"

I know is not so, you have a gift that let to see "WHERE" to add those tiny or huge pieces of plastic, probably most of us even couldn't copy what you did.

Personally I built the 1/6 Kubel and Schwimminwagen and I'm ready to begin with the Willys, I will do my best to make a decent model, but never will be what you can do as I don't have the gift you have.
I hope you finish the work, probably will be your best.... for a time only LOL LOL up to the next one.

That is some impressive scratch work there, Mark! Just stumbled over this. I believe the only thing that comes close to this is the real thing...

I have a question for anyone that has built this kit already. Has anyone cut off the supports that go between the axles and the frame? They shouldn’t be there, but I understand why DML molded it that way, there is going to be a lot of weight on the springs. I am wondering if the shocks will be enough to hold the body up without the springs sagging over time.

Hi Mark
I was working on the kit during the last week, I have cut the support and let the chassis rest with a lot of weight during several days, the shocks support perfectly the weight and I don't think those supports are necessary. Even without the shock the leafsprings could mange the weight.

Thank you Mario. I will probably be cutting mine off too, whenever I get back to that part of the build.

Incredible work!!! The detail you have added is some of the best and neatest I have ever seen. On the other side , I never thought the Dragon model was so bad.
One thing, the foot rests of the kit are Ford style, they should be willys type.

Just a quick update today.

I have been working on the .50 cal. I didn’t like the way the DiD metal .50 cal was turning out, so I decided to use a plastic DML .50 cal. I was able to re-use the barrel, but had to modify the mount to fit the DML MG. I was able to re-use the 2 side pieces, but had to re-make the rest. I am much happier with the way this one turned out.

Here is my MG mount compared to the DML mount from the B-17F waist gunner set.

I had already made up the heavy barrel (land) version of the MG and scratchbuilt the pedestal, mount and ammo holder for it and didn’t want it to go to waste. I decided to make a stand for it so I could display it next to the jeep.

That’s all for now,
Thanks for looking.

Here’s another quick update.

The DML grease gun (on the right) isn’t the type that I have seen in most of the pictures I have found, so I made my own version.

I also made up the bracket to hold it to the hood.

The bracket opens and closes, allowing the grease gun to be removed. The grease gun handle can be pumped the same as the real thing.

That’s all for now, more to come later.

Thanks for looking.
