finaly i got back into modelling after my 4and a half month tour from the sandbox.

already started the project before leaving but didn't finish it, cause i don't want to rush it

it's the Dragon m1 Aim kit with some other bits and pieces
the base is scratch the statue will come from VP, still need to think about the figures i want to use

During build

a coat of Primer

now the sh*t started hit the Fan. after the Base+Gloss coat the whole thing started to turn out dark yellow
"maby because i tryed a bit of that modulation thingy never done before and added a little to much yellow i think"
almost trowed the piece against the wall. but after cooling down i kind of drybrushed with oil paint the vehicle the right color
and think it looks fine now.

sorry, no picture's of that process, but is was Waaaaay to yellow.

scratched interior, no not everything is correct it i think it looks okay trough the hatches

Hull almost finished

front side, tryed some of the dryed dirty oil stains?? you see on these tanks.they still need some final touch

right side, some large scratches along the side must somehow taken some paint of the marking with it

sprocket wheel, i tryed some rust effect and heavy wear on it

now i need to work on the turret and offcourse the base it will come on

the base, i took the idea from the thunder run book, and again thanks Bob burik for some aditional images.
it is not totaly correct cause i didn't look long enough at the images to figure out there shouldn't be any asphalt road along the side
but these things i always discover after i build it.

that's it for now

Hi Gijs!

Your Abrams looks great!!! It´s cool to see someone else, who also wanted to build the turret interior in 1/35! Yours turned out very crispy and well detailed....which set / kit have you used?
For my Abrams i used parts of the Verlinden´s Abrams interior set, but finally i had to make almost every part by scratch... The parts were designed for the old 105mm M1 tanks...

I don´t know which paint you were using for the hull, but it looks absolutely authentic! Depend on light sources, the original paint on the OIF Abrams vary from bright sand to dark yellow...
Im looking forward to see your build progress!
Good luck!

Greetings

Gijs,

First off, I'm glad you are back home safe and sound from your deployment!

Your newest Abrams is looking great. The color looks very good, and I really like some of the details you have added to the already great DML M1A1 AIM kit, like the removal of half of the skirt hinge:

In case you didn't catch it, your third Armored Skirt Support Brackets are both upside down - the "bow" should be down, IMHO to allow for clearance of the track guide horns of the track droops between the two support rollers during maximum suspension travel (picture from Prime Portal):

I'm pretty sure these brackets CAN be installed as you have them, but my guess is the above is why these specific brackets are not straight like the other two. If I have this wrong, someone please correct me...

yep i already saw your abrams in the campaign forum looks great too
i only used the gun breach from the kit and some pieces like the commander pannel from the old revell 'old dragon rebox kit' but most of it is built from scratch

looks good so far Gijs, what did you use for the base color?

yeah the basecolor even a mystery for me
i think you'll come close with mixing
vallejo AIR sand with a litlle Vallejo AIR sandyellow
i took the hard way and sprayed it with all kind off shades to simultate fading and that only to find out after the gloss cote everything turned kind of dark yellow, and find myself drybrushing/washing the whole vehicle to the right color. it was a frusterating procces:_|

LoL this took me quite some time to understand what you are meaning
i see if i can change it, but you won't see the brackets aymore since the sideskirts are on, but thanks for pointing me at that

the dio, hmm i can't post a picture of it i think because of copyright things and such, corect me if i'm wrong but it is original in a concord book

but the tank will be backed up against the statue some figure's around it, thats basicly it, the ones that have the concord thunder run book will remember the scene it's on page 18

thanks guys, some pictures of the interior pre-painting

as you can see, i only detailed what you can see trough the hatch

some process today

weathered the commanders rws

also the gunner's sight 'doghouse' some scratches and rust spots cause of the shells and links comming out the .50

some work on the front CIP's

i made these out of evergreen with some Alu foil strips. damaged them a little where the crew would step on the vehicle.

now onto the rest of the turret.

Gijs, the painting is the best i've seen at an 1/35 Abrams by far! Here on my monitor your colour seems to be nearly exactly the colour of reals M1s. Could you please discribe it's mixture? Thanks!

many thanks,
yeah the color like i said even a mystery for me i will try to explain it,
first of all a coat of primer
preshade of vallejo burnt umber
sprayed the whole vehicle after that with a mixture of vallejo AIR Sand,
AIR Sand Yellow, and some beige
in my case a bit too much, after the gloss cote for the decals it was evident that i used to much beige in the mixture the tank was Waaay to yellow cause of the gloss it became a dark yellow color No Good

okay i was thinking what could i do, i started washing/drybrushing the tank with oil paint, mixed to the actual Sand color after that this is what i got, i don't think i will ever come as close as this on the real color again. it was just luck i guess

you also can't see the preshade effect anymore cause of the drybrushing process.

okay what did i today

first converted the loaders MG into a M240B version by adding the handguard

many tiny holes

added the vehicle's number to the .50 i saw it in some picture's i think it's a nice adition, also you'l notice the rust spot on the barrel on the photo it realy stands out i corrected this by making it a little darker, also mady the 50 a little dusty.

Could you tell us, which colours you used for the .50? It looks like a 100% match!

Thanks,

All i got to say is... OMFG!

The chipping (hairspray technique or brushed?) is nicely balanced and well placed. With a good background it would be hard to distinguish the last two photos from real photos. And the M2 is painted with which colour? The barrel is from Voyager i guess.

I also like the ammo belts. Are these the ones from Voyager Model or Lion Roar? When i bented my first links, i was near to bad headache, by the way, but after a few more tries it worked pretty good. All i needed was a pointy blade or a needle, a lighter and a 0,3mm drill.

for the 50cal i used vallejo german grey as the base color, drybrushed with some silver applied some pencil power to give it the metal shine,
small black wash with oil paint and a pinwash for the dust with a buff color

Great looking tank!!! I might have missed it in the thread but where did you get the small chains for the .50cal retaining pins, or how did you make them?

For a comparison - not the same angle but close enough (image from Prime Portal):

Hey Gijs,
great job so far! what kit did you take the cal 50. from, doesn't look like the voyager one?

I think that device is some sort of hammer used to set up poles and the like... but of course you can also use it as 'magic key'

Cheers, Max

That is a Pickett Pounder, simply a tube made of metal with one end closed off, handles welded to the side, and used to drive picketts into the ground. It does make decent door ram depending on how it was built and how much it weighs.

Looking awesome! I'm building the M1A2 right now, and I hope my weathering looks 10% as good as that. BTW, what are "the hairspray technique?" and "the sponge technique?"
(I'm primarily an airplane modeler. They don't get as dirty, so I'm not up to speed on these newfangled heavy-weathering techniques.)

Excellent Abrams build...

Hey Red, heres something on the sponge technique.
The hairspray technique is around somewhere.
