This is my 1/35 resin “Red Carpet Models” Ratel 20 IFV of the South African Defence Force while being used by Natal Mounted Rifles in 1988.

Although tank crew, I spent a month as crew on this particular Ratel.

It is not fully complete, I still need to complete the registration numbers, add callsign’s (T10) and the vehicles name (Diesel & Dust), also a few details need adding on, more antenna, indicator light guards and some weathering/ paint touch ups..

All the hand holds, railings and the rear turret gun mountings were made using various thickness wire supplied with the kit.

I drilled out the solid crew commander position and vacum molded a new hatch lid.

The turret has not been fixed in place yet and I have I noticed after I took the photos that the turret was out of alignment (see darker brown unweathered section around top of hull near turret ring).

It was a great kit to build, unfortunately this company has closed down and this particular kit is unavailable.
There is however a 1/35 Ratel available by Baxmod (http://www.baxmod.co.za)

Nice work! How does that kit go together? I have the Baxmod Ratel (but no instructions!) and haven't started it yet

Thanks,

It went together very nicely, it is solid resin with no interior at all, but came with a very nice photo etch set and various diameter strips of wire.

The instructions had templates for the wire parts.

I also have tan unbuilt Baxmod one, Im going to convert it to a Ratel 90 some day!

Interesting vehicle we don't see that often. The build looks clean and the painting is really convincing.
Thanks for sharing.

Thank you everybody for the kind words!

Unfortunately "Red Carpet Models" went out of business a few years ago and their kits are no longer availible.

However, you can get a 1/35 Ratel 20 including a full interior from Baxmod, the also do a range of other uniquely South African Armour in both 1/72 and 1/35.

Some photos:

Well guys I have some good news and some bad news.

The good new is I have found the 1:24th Ratel and the drawings I have taken some pictures of the 24th Ratel below.
The bad news is I cannot find my 1:35th Ratel i know where it is I just cannot get to it, I will see if I can get the Drawings Scanned during the week as they are on paper and to 1:24th and I need a large Drawing scanner, if I can get them scanned then everyone can have them.

Now don't be harsh the model is 24 years old.

WOW PETE!!!!!!! Thats looking fantastic!!

You have just got to finish that.

What materials are you using to construct it?

I would love a scanned copy of the plans, even in 1/35 scale would be great.

I have been toying with the idea of building a 1/16 scale Ratel for radio control.

Fantastic.

Guys

Please bear in mind that the model has been sitting in a shoebox on top of a wardrobe for the last 24 years.

To be honest I'm not sure if I will finish the 24th scale model, if you take a look at my web site you can see I'm a bit busy with my business, and yes I will be bringing out some 35th military products soon those will be formerly dealt with all in good time so keep an eye out.

Pete
