Ola Guys

I have been walking around with the idea to make a small base with a partially destroyed KVI with the turret on the ground and some figures among the debris. Found some awesome picture galleries with period pics of a lot of damaged and abandoned KV's... But Most of the pictures I see with the turret separated from the vehicle shows it with the bottom up which leaves you with a huge hole that shows the innards of the business station of the KV.
Is there a manufacturer out there that makes an interior for the KVI? I know there are some big differences among the shapes and dimensions of the turrets of the several types but probably the configurations are pretty much the same (quotation needed)

So basically I'm looking for an AM producer to kit out a KV I turret. And if there is no such thing... What publication would be best to use as a guide to scratch these details?

Looking forward to hear from you guys.

With friendly greetz from nocturnal Holland

The only thing I can find are some cut away drawings , front , side and top view of a KV 1 1940 in the Tank Power book # 320 KW III .The KV is a lot like the T 34 , no turret basket , rounds stored in bins on floor , racks of MG ammo drums , etc .
The book also has diagrams of all the on vehicle storage in those fender bins . Great info if you want to show them open and being rifled through by German troops
I think the Vanguard book might have some diagrams as well . Jim

Hi, Robert
I think Verlinden used to make some kits for KV.
But if you decide to make it from scratch, I got at least 30 pictures of it. Too many to post it here, but I can upload them to my Picasa album.

It would be nice if someone would make a generic interiour for all those Trumpeter KV 1s.( the KV 2 is still" mostly" a mystery ) The lower hull should be pretty much the same , ammo storage , fuel tanks , driver & co driver seats , MG ammo drums . The turret might be a little different in the set up of the F-11 or F-32 guns .
Dosn't have to be all the bells and whistles as the Inside the Armour stuff . Most KVs are pictured blown apart .

Ola Guys
Thanks for replying.

@ Jim
Thanks for that tip. Going to hunt down that book. It certainly would be a great help. And indeed it is weird that there are no real interior sets for this vehicle. There are a few surviving examples in several museums as I'm not mistaken. I'm pretty sure I saw one in Bovington. Is it just an empty hull? And you are right about the ridiculous amount of pictures from Knocked out and abandonned KVI's and KV2's. There is this Russian site which has a huge load of period pictures showing these beasts in all sorts of stages of being knocked out.

@ Alex
Only thing I could find from Verlinden is an engine compartment set. Not really what I was looking for. I would be very interested in seeing the pictures you have as it should be a great help once I get around buying a Trumpeter kit and start scratchbuilding.

Robert, I will see what else I have in books on this topic, and I will post everything by the end of this weekend (could be Monday morning in your time zone).
I hope it is not too urgent.

Ola Alex...

No worries.. Nothing is on fire yet. I like to take my time with every project and often do my research months in advance of actually building it. Usually I print everything out and put it in the box of the kit I'm planning to use and when I finally get crackin I have everything at hand immediately. Looking forward what you will bring up.

These are the images of what I have so far on KV-1 interior:

It is not much, but I hope it will help. If I find more, I will let you know.
Good luck with your project,
Alex

@ Alex.
Thanks for uploading those pictures. They will be superusefull when i start scratching the details. Looking at those pics it is certainly doable. And I should get 90 percent of all the details in that turret right from your pictures.

@ Mauro.
No problem. What is usefull and interesting for me is also usefull for others. It is one of the great things of the modellingworld if you ask me that information is shared in such a good way. Only the first two drawings you posted is not KVI but Jagdtiger. I downloaded them anyway as I have a Jagdtiger with an interior set so still usefull

While looking at the pictures it got me wondering if it is possible to use bits of other kits and AM manufacturers to kit out the interior. For instance. What make is the gun? And was it used as a solitary AT gun. That should sort out for a great deal the breach part for the interior of the KV. The machine guns are of Degtjarev (Spelling) make and are they available from any manufacturer? Same goes for the holders for the machinegun ammo drums is that something that is available from a PE manufacturer?

I still have to make up my mind which KV I'm going to buy. But I'm already thinking on how to slice it up so I can create several (up to 4) vignettes with one tank

The KV used the same gun as the T-34 , so I think most of the AFV turret interiour could be used . You just need to add a rear MG , ready rounds and a few other bits and pieces .

@ Jim.
That is interesting. You are reffering to the T34/76 I pressume. Might have to hunt one down to see what is useable.

@ Mauro
You know... been there done that bought the T-shirt and the single. If I don't immediately put stuff away in a clearly titled folder and such I have no clue where to find said stuff back. And the result is that I never find what I am looking for.

Not much help for you now Robert, but KV1 interiors are on this years to do list for Inside the Armour. Don't expect them early in the year though.....

That is excellent news and don't you worry. I always start my research months in advance. I have a few other projects on the go still so before I start on the KV project you can probably create 10 interiors. I think I'll await the ITA offering as it will make my life much easier. Looking forward to your creation.

Not familiar at all mate not familiar at all.
I always like the comments from my fiancee when I get a new kit in. stuff like "oh yeah you really needed that one" or the classic "didn't you already have one of those" but at least for now she is not negative about what I do. I hope she will not quickly find out what I spend in total each month on photographs
