Hi Gang,

one interesting side aspect of our hobby is the use of Tanks and AFV in movies and TV shows. We all know that German tanks of WWII are a rare breed and the movie maker have to look for fake tanks. I remember the Leopard 1 as Panther in "A Bridge too far" or the "Tiger/T-34" from "Kelly`s Heroes". After watching "Defiance" staring Daniel Craig, I still wonder which tank they have used for the Panzer III. Probably something from Russia. Anyone can shed a light on this?
Maybe this could be an idea for a future campaign?

TIA

This vehicle is notable for being one of two Swiss Panzer 61 based "Panzer III" film prop conversions carried out for the 2001 film "Enemy at the Gates." At least one of these Pz.61 "Pz.IIIs" also made an appearance in "All the Queen's Men" (2001) and "The Pianist" (2002). The Swiss Pz. 61 or 68 makes for a decent, yet oversized Pz.III surrogate, but based on the side profile of the Pz.61 "Pz.III" the following photo

I just got photos of a Aussie Centurian modified to look like an M1A1 in "Courage Under Fire". I found it in a museum/boneyard just outside Kenosha Wisconsin. Pics soon.

In the film "Patton", they used M47 Pattons to look like unnamed German tanks in the North African scenes.

That is a really good idea for a campaign! You could include the Tiger from Saving Private Ryan also.

I would not join you in the campaign because I am a party pooper. I liked those movies, but I am too much of a stickler for accuracy and as I get older and more knowledgeable about the subjects, I can't look past the substitutions. Building models to mimic movie errors WOULD NOT COMPUTE and I think my brain might blow up!

We've come a long way since the old Battle of The Bulge type movies, THIS is one of several replicas built by WETA for "Panzer 88" ( sorry, never could work out how to imbed videos here ).

They also built a replica Mk.IV for the film Warhorse.

Not to start a major debate here, but your logic does not compute. How is building a model of an existing vehicle (a movie tank) differ from building a model of an existing vehicle (an original)? In both cases you are accurately trying to replicate a real item.

It's actually funny that this subject came up. The guy at the local hobby store recently talked me into trying to build one of the "Kelly's Heroes" Tigers. We're in process of information gathering now. I don't know if I'd join a group build with it though, as it's a "back-burner" project for me.

Oh hey, to clarify again, I think this is a great idea! I know a lot would participate. It's a pretty fun topic.

It does make sense to build an accurate model of a movie prop. However, I don't have enough time to build models of the vehicles I like, let alone movie replica's of those vehicles. The thought of taking a T-34, a tiger, and some spare styrene and kitbashing the Saving Private Ryan tiger in 1/35 makes my brain feel like:

While it does make sense, it is kind of funny you know? Building an accurate model of an inaccurate model (the 1:1 movie prop). Maybe its just me.

In the original Rats of Tobruk they used the Australian Sentinel Tanks.
There is an interesting British wartime film with Valentines playing the role of German tanks in a major exercise. They look fetching with WW1 style Balkenkruez on the turret.

What were the tanks used in "The Brest Fortress"?

Not tanks, but I remember the M3 halftracks in "The Rat Patrol".

Russ they used M3 Half tracks and M7 GMC's in Rat Patrol. I apparently did not get a pic of the Centurian/M1A1 specifically. Give me a minute to up load the pics I did get, it's in the background.

I checked and this is the only shot woth the modded Centurian. You can see the turret in the background. Why I didn't take more pics of that I do not know.

I will say that I actually leaned on the thing and found all the mods are made from about 1/4 inch sheet metal, welded together. Welds were dressed rather well where they would be visible on camera.
