Does the model have to start with a kit?

Does a printed Paper Model count as a kit? Can I enter a model into your forumn if it is a plastic/wood/metal model built from a printed Paper Model?

Well, basically a Campaign starts with a kit or kits, then go from there. This is an unusual question so I would want to ask our Campaign Guru a ruling as to what is allowed.

Well Gary? Can a Campaign be started (as what is being proposed) by just using basic materials to create the subject matter without a plastic or resin kit to start with?

These are examples of papermodels (kits?) for a Sherman:

Hi Jeff, not sure what (if any) rules Gary has about this situation, but if as Leader you just want Shermans and don't mind scratch-building then there's no reason I can see for refusing just because he doesn't start with an existing kit. I for one would be very interested to see how he gets on! But ultimately as Leader it's your call...

Oh thanks Tom.

Look, this is why Gary is in charge as I don't make or break the rules. The Campaign doesn't start 'till next year so what's the rush on an answer? Surely everyone can appreciate getting a clear answer instead of allowing it, then only to find out later there is a problem. And since it is MY Campaign I'll feel better doing it this way as basically ALL Campaigns are based on kits.

Jeff,

It may be a bit of a spoiler, but this is my build plan:

I used Excel to compare various Sherman measurements listed online against an inexpensive but less-accurate "1:32 Classic ScrewTite M4A3" and an actual Sherman E8 on Fort Meade. Then, with 8.5 x 11 paper model sheets in hand, I used over-sized printers to scale the sheets up to the size I want to build. The (now 36" x 48") sheets will be transferred (or rubber cemented) to 1/4 plywood for the welded-plate hull and some of the flat/raised details, while stacks of Styrofoam will be carved/puttied/sculpted/fiberglassed into the (cast M4) turret. Some parts (wheels) will be built up from plastic and cardstock, to be molded for cast-resin appliqués. Other parts will be made of PVC, carved of wood or cast in other materials. Anyway.... "Multimedia Scratch-Building” is the name of my game. Or "Hording", if you ask my wife. I want to save the rest of the details for the progress/reveal.

Scratchbuilding:
If this build style doesn't fit into your campaign, I won't be offended. I appreciate the focus of the site, as it IS called Kit Maker Network. I am here to play by your rules, not change everyone else's hobby site.
I know kit manufacturers are sometimes more supportive, by buying advertising space and providing kits for reviews, if they see their interests being preserved. Other companies see ANY modeling (including scratchbuilding) as providing potential customers.

Either way, I will save the link to Armorama and post a link to build photos (for those interested) when I get done. I have definately decided on building a Sherman Calliope, and plan to lean heavily on any research or build photos I can find.

Now look, if I were making the rules I would say yes! BUT, I do not want to overstep my boundaries as when in doubt ... ASK! It's not like it starts this month, or next week or today.

I think it will be a cool Campaign entry so lets just sit on it for a bit and let Gary answer my PM.

Thanks!

Scratch-building has certainly been allowed before in campaigns, although mostly when a kit wasn't available. Although the build wouldn't be all plastic, I (and others it seems) feel this build would be interesting to watch.

I would have to think about whether someone doing a purely paper model should be allowed (we have a paper model forum on ModelGeek). But since this isn't purely paper, I have no problems allowing it.

I know the campaign has not yet started, but here are a couple of photos of a 1/16 scale sherman I have on my work bench.

I'll post a few more in a couple of weeks when I have more done.

Tom if you know this Campaign hasn't started yet, then why post pictures? PLUS, the number one rule here is it 1) Must not be started, so this build cannot be allowed for this Campaign. It may however be allowed in the Large Scale Campaign... but still, hold off on posting any pictures of the build please AND the ruling there is that it may not be more than 50% started or built.

From what I have seen so far it looks very close to that percentage.

HTH and thanks for your enthusiasm!

Tom (Moon), if you're too far along for the Large Scale Campaign, you could enlist in the Get Her Done Campaign. I'm using that campaign as added motivation to finish up some partial builds I have gathering dust.

Anyway, you have options. And thanks for sharing.

I'm seriously considering a new Campaign titled...

FREE FOR ALL

Due to recent developments I think this is long overdue. Here you may enter whatever you want, start whenever you want because there will be NO STINKIN' RULES to abide by! So we can use our started kits and kits that don't even fit in the title.

Also, we won't wait for it to be approved or even use a start date, we'll just start it __ __ __ NOW! No questions to field nor the need for a Campaign Leader so we can feel free to GO FOR IT!!

Anyone on board? I just want to be an equal opportunity offender.

I understand the this can not be included in this campaign, however, I just wanted to get folks juiced up about the Sherman campaign.
As for the large scale campaign I have the 1/24 Pz II ready to start when the time comes.
As for Getting them finished campaign, (Sigh) I have way too many choices to pick from, and will be looking at that campaign in September.

Ah-huh. Don't need it so post it in the Armor section please. This space is for the Campaign work and after the start date too.

Thanks.

I think it's a very cool model Tom, thanks for sharing it. It certainly doesn't fit within the timeline or unstarted rules of this campaign, but it sure is a Sherman and nice to see. Makes me look forward that much more to the model(s) you, and everyone else, will do when the campaign actually gets started!

That's very true Michael, as I have built 3 of them. The M4 105MM, a M4A1E8 and the M4A3 76MM "Oddball" tank and have a few more "in the works", sort of speaking.

But let's show it off somewhere else as this space is for the Sherman Campaign and we don't need to get juiced up 5 months ahead of time and that 40 members have signed up without the help.

Of course, we can discuss possible kits or projects, post pictures for historical research, but leave the "other builds" for another time.

Some of us have been here long enough to know better so I shouldn't have to say so.

Jeff,

Totally your campaign and your rules man! I just thought the "Free For All" post was a bit, well, barbed.

I do love the Sherman though, and am looking forward to getting started. Hopefully 5 months is enough time to make up my mind which one to build. Right now, I'm looking forward to January for a break in the heat!

Michael, the "Free For All" reply was total sarcasm and anyone who took exception to it or was offended by it then they are guilty as charged.

I wonder what kind of reaction would be received if that was done to someone else's Campaign?

I'm doing all this just for some serious, but pure fun and don't need the drama of a few individuals free-lancing efforts.

I do hope that all that have enlisted will have fun as that's all I want to see. Who knows if I make it to the start date at the rate it's going now.

Gary,
How do I remove the two photos that I have posted that has caused so much concern.
The FAQs says to click the edit button on the post, but I was not able to find it.
I apparently can't delete the photos from my set of photos.
Can you help me?

I want to build an unprecedented triple build for this Sherman Tanks Only Campaign! I'm trying to line up a second 1/16th RTR to modify along with the 1/16th M4A1 Profiline.

It's going to be fun!

The Edit button only works for 10 or 15 minutes after you post. I think some user was abusing the ability to edit a post by changing his post days afterwards. A forum moderator can help with editing/deleting a post. I have such powers in the Campaigns forum but not in any of the others. I can help with a gallery problem.

Did you want the pictures removed from the post or the entire post?

All I asked was to hold off on posting any pictures, period. Not to remove them!

If there is to be ANY deleting then I might suggest all related replies here be deleted because the whole conversation would look stupid.

Because the efforts of a few individuals, they have really ruined the spirit of what a Campaign is all about as this one now is tainted.

Congratulations!
