wife and daughter going to swim meet tonight, frees me up for a chunk of uninterrupted bench time. I even left the Scheutnor out on the benchtop ready for me...
As long as I dont get distracted by World of Tanks, I ought to get a good jump on the kit.
Pics later, I hope,.

Chief,
I'll have to keep an eye on your build. I've got that kit in the stash. But it hasn't worked its way to the top of the pile yet...

Hi guys, I got started on my build yesterday, as you can see from the photo it is AFV Club's Flak 18. I plan to build a desert diorama, hence the HobbyFan figures. I should be able to make some rapid progress over the next couple of weeks as I am recovering from surgery which give me a lot of time at the bench.

The kit is very well detailed amd there are A LOT of small parts that will no doubt give me a challenge. The one downside to this kit is that there are several ejector pins still attached, some of which are in hard to get at places. I have built several AFV Club kits in the past and this is the first time I have seen this many ejector pins; must have gotten a kit produced on a Monday or Friday!

The following photos show the progress from yesterday and today.

Last night's progress on the AFV Club pak 43/41 88mm at gun.

and

Old AFV Club kits have lots of large sprue attachment points, some ejector pin marks and some mold lines. This one adds to that slightly unclear directions.

Hopefully more progress tonight.

I've had the kit for a while, been thinking of starting and actually had to WAIT to start of the campaign to kick off, plus the free time last night helped.

I'm a terrible 'fits and spurts' builder. I just hope this one doesn't end up in a gettr done campaign sometime later..

I am planning to tackle this kit. Having to build up some fortitude to tackle this multi media kit. Vaccuform shield, resin cruciform and metal barrel Adding a pair of dollies that were obtained from a junk pile at my friend's store. An Azimut 88mm Pak 43L/71. Since several are planning to build the ARV 88, thought that I should be a tad different. This is the first time I am building a field piece. Thus I am thinking that I should paint the main parts, then assemble to avoid knocking off bits and obtaining a plausible paint coverage. Any better ideas? Any help will be appreciated. Hopefully I can get this projekt done before the end date.

Wow, a lot of progress right from the beginning.

Chief gunner, please share your insights on your kit with us. I have the same kit in the stash and are curious to know if there are any issues to look out for.

Looking forward to see more.

Work continues on the "Acht-Acht" I was able to spend several hours at the bench yesterday and today and realy made a lot of progress. The build is going smoothly with only a few moments spent on my hands and knees looking for a small dropped part; I am sure there will be others.

I am still dealing with several left over ejection pins and that is taking some time to deal with. I have also done some very minor scratchbuilding by replacing the plastic u-bracket and hook for the chains with parts I fahioned from copper wire. I also modified the chains a bit to match my reference photos.

Enjoy the pictures,
Ernest

I recognize that color styrene.. a bit of uninterrupted time goes a long way on those kits.

Does your 88 have gigantic sprue attachment points on teeennnyyyy tiny parts?

I do love the level of detail, but maannnnn some of those attachment points are bigger than the part.

I'm not sure my camera can even capture the knobs on the bottom of the brake cylinders, but I cut them, cleaned them up and glued them both on.

Pics later.

more progress on the Schuetnor.

there in the background is that TINY little handle B9 in the instructions. the lever arm above and to the right was no walk in the park either. the 'keyed' half round opening is a great idea, it's just SMALLER than the male part that fits through it.
Lots of careful micro-carving later, parts installed, cold beer needed.

gun/breech/cradle

limber legs, interesting that AFV Club gives you metal rods to put in the far ends to conterbalance the long metal barrel.

Limber base.

Hey Mike Duguay...

BTW, I have uploaded a photo of my kit, but I can't figure out how to link it to this post. Is there an FAQ????

Mark,
More AFV Club 88's the better.
Solder, CA or Gatorglue for the etch?
Full etch shields?

I have the devils own time using the kitmaker gallery. I've been here a while and some of the older images have gone all wonky. I tried to get it to work but had little luck.

I just went for the free hosting at photobucket, upload the pictures from the phone, and then open the image library, click on the IMG tab on the right to copy the html, then paste it into the window here.
viola- or some other large stringed instrument..

Hi Mike, your "Barn Door" build is progressing nicely. I think our kits were produced at basically the same time in the early/mid 2000's. The sprue attachments and ejector pins are fairly "rough" compared to AFV Club's more current production kits. I recently built their SiG 33 and found the attachments/pin markings to be very very clean and well done.

I have sweat out detaching many of the parts from the sprues on this kit - and have managed to break a couple in the process - due to the thick attachments. The left over pins have been irritating to say the least as a few of them are in plces that are nearly immpossible to clean up well. However, it is still a nice kit and I am generally havinf a good time building it, the detail is excellent.

Hope you are having and equally good time with your build. It looks like you are making good progress also.

Sincerely,
Ernest

Mark,
If you have your picture in your gallery you are halfway there, go to your gallery click on the picture you want and below next to linked thumbnail after the boxed text line is a little picture frame with a chain at the bottom click that and you get a link you can copy and past into your post.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask if it's not clear.

Cheers Rob.

Hi Mark, that should be a sweet build. Lots of PE and it looks like you are well equipped with references.

Good luck and have fun with the build,
Ernest

Made some progress the past two days, completing the general construction of the gun. I replaced the handles on the gun shield with metal ones I made from wire. I positioned a couple of the wingnuts at different angles to add some variety. I also replaced two rods on two of the crufiform platform legs with copper ones that I made, the kit ones looked too short. I still have to clean up the sub-assemblies prior to painting the parts, which I will do after I have finished the transport hangers. They are turning out to be a lot of work, as there are several pin marks scattered about and a couple of small sinkholes also. We will see how cleaning all of that up goes.

Enjoy the photos,
Ernest

Wow Ernest,

You are kicking butt! I am still in the "thinking about it" stage.... I have been working with the extensive Voyager update for the Trumpeter - Sturer Emil kit. Although the instructions are pretty good, I find that sometimes subtle, often huge modifications to the basic kit slow me down for long periods of time.. I'll be watching for problems or gotchas.
