Sascha, the M110 is that ridiculous eight inch SPG right? I think I'm safe in saying it's only really trumped by the Soviet 2B1 Oka, 420mm of long barrel-ed death.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:2B1_oka.jpg

Glad to have you with us Jeremy; the Long Tom is a good choice.

Nice!
BTW the little brother of the 420mm OKA - the 406mm 2A3 Kondenzator 2P- is due to be released by The Panzer Shop in September.
Unfortunately it's going to be far out the price league I can afford.
I'd like to take opportunity to beg any maker looking in to give us an up-to-date M110 kit. Pretty P-lease!?

The M 110 is NOT A GUN! It is a howitzer,it shares the chassis with the M 107, 175 mm sp GUN.

I'll be joining, if my e-bay goodies ever arrive. M107, barrel and PE.

In the meantime, I'm curious what distinguishes a "Gun" from a Howitzer? I've seen some reference to muzzle velocity, and angle of fire, anything more specific.

I have a M40 "Big Shot" that says it's a Gun Motor Carriage, but the description on the instructions says it's a howitzer. Which is it?

Inspired by Lou, I was able to score an M107 and accessories on e-bay. Looking forward to starting it - only a month or so

Take it from a U.s.Field artilleryman. I commanded a 175mm gun Battery in Germany in the 70's .Bamberg. Werner Kasserne. The 175mm M107 sp is a gun. The M110 sp 8in (203mm) is a howitzer. At the time the M107 was the only gun in the US Army inventory. Thats part of the reason the Army got rid of it. They/we were hung up on the fact that it was an accurate area weapon, not precision like the 105,155,and 8in.

If you plan on posinge your 175 in a travel setting remember that in order to CSMO (Change Station March Order) the tube had to be taken out of battery. If you didn't and hit a ditch etc thetube would have hit the ground. Going through German towns you had to be carefull or in a turn you would take out a corner of a Gasthaus(my A btry 6bn 10 fa) 7VII Corps Arty.did that during Reforger III. It was a really great piece. Fired a 175 lb round about 32,000 meters. Had them in Vietnam too. 2nd Field Force.in III Corps

Hey Lou, in the last 2 pics with the enclosed fighting area... what is it? A different version of the M107?

Christopher,
I am in with this
The Scale-Link BL 60 pounder in 1/32nd
its a 5" (127mm) so it just squeezes in. I am building it in memory of my Grandfather who served with a battery of these on the Somme and with the Canadians at Vimy.

Please forgive my not answering sooner.the loading/breech cover was a winterization kit. It was like canvas over a frame. Only protected from wind and snow.the rain mostly entered through the seams. They could be erected and taken down quickly.

Also the difference between a gun and a howitzer are many. Gun is a flat trajectory and howitzer is arching. If the target is screened by a hill etc,and is on the reverse slope. The gun will not hit it, The howitzer can hit the reverse slope. The howitzer usually has more explosive and is generally a more powerful round.

In WWI the French had thousands of 75mm guns.Great for troops in the open and for hitting targets you could see. Once the trenches started they were basically useless. They did have time fuses but getting the time correct to explode over the trench was virtually impossible. the Germans started with howitzers, so they could put rounds IN the trench not above it. In fact the allies were out gunned through out the whole of WWI.

I cold go on.I would recommend a book, you can download it for free at warzone.info, it is :The Myth of the Great war: by John Mosier.

Any other questions class

I like your choice. Your grandfather had to be one tough man and when that baby fired it rolled and had to be manhandled back into battery and re laid after each shot.
The Somme and Vimy Ridge were hell holes. I studied them and like Verdun it reduces you almost to tears thinking about the men who fought, don't get angry but I include the Germans in that statement.

In my never humble opinion the soldiers were poorly led. Haig, Foche etc. The only ones I can respect are Rawlinson ,and Petain. I missed a few so please don't quibble(too much)
Joffre,Nivelle,Magnin(sp) were idiot butchers.

I walked Verdun and other WWI and WWII battlefields. Learned a lot and luckily never had to put it into practice against the Russians.

Please show your build. I for one would really like to see the 60 pounder.

Lou,
Thank you, I would agree.
I will be only to happy to post the build in this campaign.
As I cannot paint horses to save my life I have picked up a set of later type wheels for the gun from a company doing model traction engines and I have started to build a Holt 75 to tow it.

Great idea for a campaign. Looking forward to when this starts.

I won't enlist just yet, got 2 other kits on the bench already (funnily enough one is a 122mm gun ) but hopefully they will be sorted by the time this begins and if so I will be entering with this.

Should be a fun build and it'll be my first non-Soviet kit!

Hope to see more people posting what they will be working on - With 40 participants this should be a great campaign to watch.

Well, as I'm just finishing my sub for Dive 3!, Why not to tackle Revell's Mörser 18 (I think it's big enough, even in 1/72... )

Hi all!

I have not decided which gun I'll do.

Does anyone have an alternate paint scheme for the 21cm?

Jeff-
Tough to say. That gun sits in FT. Sill, USA. Do US museums paint these according to their liking or is this restored?
I don't know for sure.
Given that more than 700 had been built, I reckon that not only Desert Yellow and field greys were used.
To tell you the truth for me it is more impottant to have a good looking model than being all acurate on the scheme.

Well here is one with a worn winter camo. Maybe that'll cut it for you:

Cheers,
Guido
