It is my opinion that with the advent of Sheperd Paine's book, first published in 1980, and all the other great diorama artwork that has followed, the word "Diorama" as used in the traditional sense has become inadequate to describe the artwork that is going on today. I prefer to think of them as "Diodramas". Here are a few examples starting with Shep himself.....

Wow... that looks like a painting, not a dio. Excellent job Shep!

Shep Paine..definitely a master and an inspiration to so many, including me!

He started to tell stories..like peeling potatoes alongside a Guderian Ente or bringing branches to camouflage the vehicle. That may sound trivial and obvious today, but in those days Shep brought it up!

Thanks Shep for opening the door to diodramas and thanks John for reminding us!

Cheers

Unbelievable! I am not even aspiring, to that level. Matter of fact, I thought I was aspiring to perfection. Shep proved me wrong! Thanks for sharing.

Hi Matt,

Sheperd Paine its of course a class of its own, but I have luck to meet Mariusz, his dioramas are also very good and full of action. Look at the pictue below, its D-Day diorama. IMHO its very good and full of well shown drama. Soon I wil post more of his photos here on Armorama ad on my web page.

Cheers

Bringing branches to camouflage the vehicle! Rats! I thought I was being original. (sad face)

Shep's book motivated me to read other books on dioramas to learn more. Also, I pored over materials on model railroad layouts, which served me well as I only model in 48th scale and there is much available in O scale that can be used.

Shep Paine its a class of its own, I remember his artwork "Last stand at Gandmak" (because this is much more than diorama)

photo from railroad-line.com

And when I saw this photo, it was something unbelivable for me, and I was even thinking that I should gave up with dioramas
and modellmaking But I didnt

I am glad you didn't give up because like so many other modelers, I use Shep's work and Verlinden's work as inspiration and a level to achieve to. I have been building since I was 5 and even when I was in the service I built models. When I would get down hearted, disgusted, or frustrated, I would look at my books from Shep Paine and Verlinden and it would pick me up and push me to go farther. I agree with all. Shep Paine is in a class all his own.

you only have to count the posts to this thread (in such a short period of time) to confirm that Shep is still moving things...and more recent masters like Demchenko (wow!, Mariusz or Bill Horan (Gandamak is actually his work) all give Shep as a reference for their initial steps.
Horan stated in an interview that he actually copies Shep in many respects.
I personally think Horan is even a better painter and fig builder/converter.

Thanks again for bringing it up!!

Cheers

This work is by Bill Horan, not Shep. I double checked in Horan's book to make sure.

Al,

sorry for mistake... I am ashamed both Bill and Shep are great Masters (with big "M") and their artistic level is almost unreachable for us "mortals"

Thank you once again for correction

Cheers
