Hi Chris, that a good looking model! When I saw that Mike had put his White back in, I was wondering what new kind of magic, was going to do to the truck!

I'm fairly happy with the magic I was already able to pull from building the White triple six semi-tractor. I am very glad to have had the idea and the motivation to create this variation. I think the only magic left might be in a new and different payload; maybe the resin road grader that someone out there is offering or perhaps transporting a load of digitally printed V-2 rocket engines back to the states!

I'm still holding out hope that someone like MiniArt or Mirror would do a road grader. Like to see a 6 ton Bridge Erector and Crane Truck too.

Chris what are you planning for the fifth wheel? Use the Custom Factory offering? Scratch build it or something else?

The model world could certainly use a nice digitally printed fifth wheel for all those Chevy, GMC and Studebaker semi-tractor conversions just waiting out there!

I think a fifth wheel would be a good candidate for 3D printing. It is a more or less timeless and unchanged object 1940 thru today. There are tons of Chevy, GMC, White, Diamond T and Studebaker truck conversions in 1/35th out there just waiting to be built. Up to now I have had to rob them off toy trucks. Custom Factory now offers a Russian fifth wheel in resin that is sort of low on detail. Also personally, I would prefer one of the round design as shown here rather that the newer oval style.)

I used the Custom Factory fifth wheel to convert the White Motors 666 into a semi-tractor as shown below.




Toy fifth wheel on Deuce and a Half converted to two axle, 1 -1/2 ton Chevy semi-tractor. (Great detail for a toy!)

Please Note: The fifth wheel on the Tamiya Dragon Wagon is a Heavy Duty over-sized tow pin model that would not be appropriate for these lighter weight rated trucks.


Post-war M-199 towing dolly conversion using Dragon Wagon fifth wheel - allows other big ballast tractors such as Diamond T to tow DW trailer.

(MANY, many incorrect details on this conversion - DO NOT COPY my ideas on this one! Drawbar is correct but I have since learned that the leaf springs are wrong (should be four not two) and fifth wheel is wrong for this prototype.. (Dolly's use a special fifth wheel that does not rock fore to aft.)
