Did the location for the 2018 AMPS national convention get decided at this years convention, or am I remembering the process wrong? I thought I remembered that the site was chosen a couple of years in advance.

We are working on a couple of locations for 2018, but have not received formal AMPS International Convention bids yet. Stay tuned.

Since we have southeast this year and northeast next year seems like we should look at Midwest or west. Two places I heard discussed are northeast agian and very eastern side of midwest.

Hi;

For my way of thinking it should also be in the South ! Like maybe Florida; After all, we have A lot of People who would really like too Attend.

How many of you guys suggesting locations are AMPS members?

You know, if you joined the national club, started a local chapter, got some experience running a show, and made an offer to host the convention, you might have some actual input into the decision as to where it is held.

Just sayin' . . .

The AMPS board chooses the site based on several factors. Primarily, it's what Kurt alluded to -- the presence of an experienced cadre of AMPS members nearby who are also willing to submit a bid. If this interests anyone, please contact me or any of the board members. We'd love to get you involved.

I'm an amps member and I understand what is involved and I give my input which is what I was doing. I also understand if none of the clubs in that area put in a bid the show can't be there. I also under if the eboard could not help guide also. Such as hey we want a show in your area can can clubs x y and z work together on it. I know my club is too small to do a show but would be willing to work with others.

Orlando...convention spots abound. National IPMS for 2012 was here...big room for display and just as big rooms for vendors. Plus having Disney a hop/skip and a jump from the hotel made it a family thing as well. I attended all 3 days as I live about 40 minutes from the hotel used. Everything for the picking and/or interest is here. You will run out of time (and money perhaps) before you ever run out of things to do. Ask my grand kids! LOL

Oh yea...I'm an AMPS member (# 711) and an IPMS member (# 506).

Obviously cost is always an issue but even moreso with a club of our size. I imagine if you asked any of the guys responsible for putting these things together they would tell you that's the major limiting factor in addition to a local club or clubs willing and able to assist as was mentioned above. All the more reason to recruit new members !

Best show I ever attended and not just because I could drive. The convention rate for the hotel was astounding--$100 a night for a $450.00 room. No need for a car, great transportation and restaurants. A home run all around.

Oh--AND IT WAS AT DISNEY WORLD.

@John: The AMPS International convention has been assigned in two ways. 1) A host chapter (or chapters as referenced in Scott Wanamaker's post above yours) can come together and submit a formal bid which is reviewed by the Board. (AMPS has guidance of items to consider and check off for the possible bidders).

or 2) if any given year, no approved chapter-led effort is on the table, the AMPS board will draw from its experienced membership to scout out and form proposed sites -- and the core of those shows will be various national members and not solely reliant on local AMPS members.

Scenario 1 has occurred 3 times (VA, GA, SC) with 2017 being the 4th (CT). All other AMPS Nationals have been board-directed efforts, scenario 2 above.

Even if your companions in S Florida may not reach the numbers to make a bid, approach your regional VP (Mike Petty) with any scouting info you might have. If scenario 2 must take place, it's good to have venues previewed already. Is this something you'd be willing to take up? Contact Mike Petty (who earlier posted on this thread). He'll give you great guidance.

To all,
Just to be clear, if you are interested in possibly hosting an AMPS International Convention, please contact your regional 2nd Vice President or the 1st Vice President directly, who is the "AMPS convention expert." Contact info is located at: http://www.amps-armor.org/ampssite/contact.aspx

Additionally, we have several documents posted on the AMPS home page that lays out the bid process (http://www.amps-armor.org/ampssite/Documents/AMPSConventionBidProcess/AMPSConventionBidProcess.pdf) as well as a Show Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) (http://www.amps-armor.org/ampssite/Documents/AMPSShowSOP20070816.pdf), which lays out many but not all responsibilities of the national Society, hosting chapter/team, and show crew positions. We will be revising the SOP this summer after we receive the after action review comments for the 2016 show crew.

One of my goals, as the AMPS President, is to vary the show locations to enable all AMPS members an opportunity to have one close to their home. That being said, the International Convention is the primary source of income for the Society and site location in relation to the overall membership is an evaluative criteria in selecting a Convention site.

If you have any questions specifically of me, please send me a message via the AMPS webpage or PM me here.

At the 2016 General Meeting, the attendees voted for "Smile for the Birdie", which was explained as building what a photo depicted. Hopefully, more details to follow on the AMPS site (and here). I hope they expand the theme to include combat artist works - there are some great Bill Mauldin cartoons that would be good subjects!

Mac,
Great idea... I know that Cookie Sewell provided a detailed explanation of the "Smile for the Birdie" theme to Mike Petty there is merit in your addition. So If I were you, i'd package the combat art idea up in an e-mail and send it to Mike P for addition into the 2017 Show theme criteria. I know that he tries to get the Theme criteria out in the May-June timeframe to allow folks to use the summer doldrums to research for the fall/winter building season.

Best of luck

It is shaping up to be huge Anthony! As you know, Danbury sits in a unique location that is dense with a modelling population! Rob and I have rooms booked out already (trying to get a jump on things). Sorry you could not make it up to ArmorCon over the weekend. Hope to see you in April my friend! I am really looking forward to the show and meeting up with all our AMPS friends again!

Secured our room at Danbury already as well, even though both kids can walk now LOL.... For anyone else making the trek.... I am kind of throwing around an idea to see if I can come up with a small list of things for people to do who ARENT into the model building thing ( Erin bless her soul does a fantastic job of keeping our kids busy). How many out there bring the wife, husband, significant other who may not get as excited as we do about models???
