My wife is very supportive, but a day at the show is a lot.So I usually drop her at the mall and she does her thing, then I pick her up and we go for a nice dinner.

How many out there bring the wife, husband, significant other who may not get as excited as we do about models???

My wife wanted to go to see what it was all about. On the way home she said she never had to do that again, so she stays home and I go to the show and drive around looking at tanks and stuff for a few days.

I booked my room as well and was told 70% of the blocked rooms @ $99 are already booked - and $99 is a swingin deal.

The wife went with me to the IPMS Nationals a couple of years back in Virginia Beach. We split the time between the Convention floor and site seeing, along with visiting with my sisters who live in the area. Equal time for different venues if u will. She had some idea about modeling through the armor she sees me do, so, the expectations she had of such a gathering confirmed her awareness of such art. Another words...she liked it!

The economics of hobby shows preclude lots of places. Think venue costs and accommodations (both for attendees and vendors). However, if you know of a group of modelers who have the inside line on a very affordable place, please encourage them to contact one of the AMPS Board members. They are very willing to consider options and can offer advice on what makes a viable show bid.

There isn't an AMPS chapter in NJ any longer, at least not one that holds actual meetings, to the best of my knowledge.

However, the New Jersey Historical Miniatures Associates, which meets in Denville on the third Tuesday of the month, has quite a few AMPS members and a solid armor contingent at most meetings.

How many of you guys suggesting locations are AMPS members?

You know, if you joined the national club, started a local chapter, got some experience running a show, and made an offer to host the convention, you might have some actual input into the decision as to where it is held.

Just sayin' . . .

KL

You have to be a member to have a input ? driving 2 hours and spending $400 dollars on kits and supplies isnt enough ???? Just saying

No, no it isn't, and I think that would be obvious. If you do not belong to an organization why on earth would you think you would have a say in what the organization does??

AMPS 2018 Show will be in Dayton, Ohio, right by the U.S. Air Force Museum, May 3-5, 2018. Check out the AMPS homepage at amps-armor.org for more details, including lodging.

Cheers!

Lou R: If your concern is that somehow the AMPS leadership is resistant to finding venues that serves to expand its footprint here in the US and elsewhere, let me allay your fears. They would LOVE to have great venues in a variety of places. As I said in my post in January, many areas are not viable due to the lack of affordable convention and hotel space for an organization such as AMPS.

But I'm sure the AMPS leadership would take any suggestions. ONe of the requirements is an active AMPS membership in the locality. Indeed, this is what I did back in 2007. I stopped by a newly opened armor museum in Indiana which had very good rental rates. WIth the proximity of IN, IL, OH and MI AMPS members, I pitched the location to the AMPS Board. What followed was the 2nd ever non-Maryland AMPS national convention. And it was so successful that it was held there two more times the next four years.

Having been on the Board and its President for a bit, knowing its current members and knowing the org's vetting procedures, I can attest that there's no bias against any area of the country.

Just to reinforce what Roy said our local chapter here in central PA would love to host an national convention. We talked to AMPS leadership and they were very supportive. As we began to look into it further we soon discovered that although there are an abundance of hotels and other attractions in the area the hotel prices are rather high (low is about $200/night) and there is really no off season. So although we are ideally situated with a number of major highways, a good sized regional airport as well as proximity to AMTRAK the high cost of lodging killed it.
