I did see a video of the CGI for Rogue One and how they used sprue shots to "build" their models. Or rather it was 3D scans of parts so that it kept that legacy alive of building with existing kits. This was done as a nod to us builders who play spot the part.

Here is an article talking about it since the original Death Star was sold off.

Ship models like that had character. Each X-wing built for the movies were hand built and each had little differences. The "hero" ships were different from the "pyro" ships. A facet of model building that is fading away.
