More options :

"P-47 Thunderbolts of the 19th Fighter Squadron share the airfield with Marine Corps TBM Avengers, Isely Field, Saipan, Mariana Islands, mid-1944"

Dodge WC-51 truck + fuel trailers

Cletrac M2 tractor + fuel trailers

I'm quite sure you could even use a Ford GTB (from Commander Models) as a towing vehicle as well...

H.P.

That WC-51 and the fuel trailers would make for interesting display

You're a trouble maker. Now I'm sitting here looking for the best prices on Trumpeters 1/32 Razorback Thunderbolt. I just found the fuel trailer It really would make a great looking diorama.

Talk about options; we can even paint it yellow!

Many great replies. Of course, a trio of Wildcats costs about the same as one Corsair, H.P., so that's a good suggestion. The tractor is very intriguing, too, though I can't find a good cart or US fuel drums.

So far my two problems are #1 cannot find big enough wheels and tires that I am happy with to use for that front set. (Been shopping the 1/24th scale truck market.) #2 I know there is a vertical driveshaft going from below the truck bed up into that upper winch assembly but I cannot figure out what it is connected to. GM did offer a rear facing PTO to drive pumps, etc. so that might be what is driving the crane thru an extra drive shaft and a 90 degree gearbox.

(Can't build it if I can't build it right!)

Michael, I've actually been to the Wilson Steel scrapyard near Midura. They have 3 of the "Dinosaur Cranes" and still use them. The crane PTO is off the side of the main gearbox and goes through an angle drive then up to a 3-speed gearbox on the crane itself. I have asked Don Wilson for some close images of the mechanisms and he is happy to oblige so I will send them through once I get them. When I am back in Mildura next I will make time to get some detail shots and dimensions for you.
Cheers, D

SFAIK*, Michael Koenig, this was Post-War or not WW2 ETO (UK), I so want it to be in yellow...

I cross-kitted the Tamiya 1/48th Jimmys, as the soft-top tanker was commoner in the (UK) ETO

This would be very achievable in 1/48th btw... there is even a Beep in this scale, but very hard to find(?)

2 Jimmys

I have a recollection of a short run kit from "Fonderie Miniature" carried by Squadron in the US about 12 Years ago. I can provide no details but it might still be out there in cyberland

It's of the 'Non-USAF' Fuel Tanker https://www.scalemates.com/kits/184892-fonderie-miniature-8004-gmc-cckw-353-fuel-tank

From experience with FM kits, avoid like the plague.

The Hobby Boss GMC CCKW 750 gallon Tanker 83830 will be an easier starting place than the FM kit... Has it's own issues, princapally the cab & doors too short, bonnet/hood too long, cross-kit with the Italeri hard-top, or Italeri/Heller/Tamiya soft-top.

Damian, that I more or less what I figured but could not be sure. The prospect of more detail photos is a fantastic possibility!

Isn't world wide communication wonderful?

The Very one, but UKP£61/USD$79I'll have to think about.

You didn't say you wanted a cheap 1/48th scale Beep

Here's a WC-54 :

First look review

The adress in the review above is obsolete. Here's the correct one :

http://www.peolini-design.com/mainpages/products.html

A cheaper option is the Tank Workshop WC-54

Mig Production had released both variants as well but they're OOP. You may try finding them on eBay...

For what ever my 2 cents is worth, I was building a coupe 2 1/2 tonners a while back. From what I remember as a general rule GM production went to the Army, Studebakers went to Lend Lease and the Navy got the International Harvester made trucks. As for the yellow truck, was that post war or a state side rig? I can't believe anybody in a combat zone would have such an easy to spot , giant Molotov Cocktail on their base.

Hello Sir, did you have more information regarding the crane truck? I'm also researching to build one in 1/72.
Thanks,
