Hi everyone,
I've read on this forum about some early DAK gear being partially covered with desert color while the rest of the vehicles were left in the original dark gray.

But I can't find any pictures that clearly show this. I've seen some profiles where it was done in a splinter-type scheme, but never with any photo documentation.

Anybody got a link to some photos?

Thanks,

Gaz

Gaz, how about this one (though not a Pz III):

The Concord photo book, Armor of the Deutsches Afrikakorps has a photo of this same tank showing its right side. It's caption states that it had a sandy yellow coat applied thinly and in wavy patterns over the dark gray base.

Cheers,

Tat

That is definately a great resource.

Gary remember one thing. The paint shortage occurred early in the campaign and only effected those first arrivals such as Panzer Regiment 5.

As such, this look would be seen on Panzer I's, II's, Panzerjaeger I's Panzer III G's (some F's) Befehlspanzer III E's (some H's)and Panzer IV D and E.

All the other vehicles were subject to paint limitations ss well. Rommel's SdKfz 250, Greif, is Dk Gray with RAL 8000 patches. The RAL 7008 was to be sprayed over the gray later, but apparently never was. This is why you see some gray/brown tanks and trucks.

By the time Panzer Regiment 8 arrived in Tripoli, their Panzers were already painted RAL 8000.

Frenchy,
Thanks for the link!

Wayne,
Thanks for that info. I'm building a PzIII G for an upcoming campaign and I want to do it in partial RAL 8000 over RAL 7021.

I want to save later full RAL 8000 for later vehicles.

It may be not obvious but I guess the two-tone camo of these two tanks can be noticed (1941) :

The top photo shows G models from Pz.Reg.5. The track section carried on the fender next to the air intake is a dead give away. Every photo I have seen depicting the initial tanks of this regiment show this as well as the "cowcatcher" track segment across the bow.

The bottom photo is an H model. Based on what I see on the turret roof, I believe she's from Pz.Reg.8. They arrived in country with a unique jerry can rack attached to the turrets. The camo is most likely RAL 8000 with RAL 7008 overspray.

It took a few minutes on the first one until I saw the pattern on the fender. The second one, I think, has been profiled on the web and a recent book by Mig Jimenez.

Thank you again, sure.
