I'll say one thing for the Russians. They sure know how how to do massive fire appliances.

Oh, yeah, they do...refuelers too...

The MAZ 537 based airport refueler...

Seems to be quite a complex towing arrangement on some of the FT17s. Looks like a sprung device attached to the track frames leading to a tow bar at the back.

It's a damping device to prevent jerking. The trial (in late 1918) wasn't a success...One of the problems, like you say, was that the FT could not move slowly enough to prevent ship generated waves that damage banks (suction scour) .

Looks like military vehicles other than tanks are allowed in this thread

Yeah, I got carried away a little bit. The thread title should be changed somehow...

Apparently the budget cuts following the collapse of the Soviet Union forced the company to roll out a low-cost towed variant as well...

Are these deployed during wildfires?

Exactly (wildfires are frequent in Corsica...)

These vehicles are called M113 MICNA (Module d’Intervention face aux risques Climatiques, Naturels et Anthropiques)

They're also used on snowy grounds :

Just to go slightly

Regarding the M113s in Corsica, no doubt these are used due to their off-road ability to fight forest fires, but it reminds me of a story I heard on the radio only last night reporting that there is something of an epidemic of fire fighters in France coming under increasingly regular attack, including from youths who deliberately set cars on fire and then wait for les pompiers to arrive. I guess it's possible that one of these M113s could reasonably be deployed in such a situation.

In terms of this question:
The FT17 could only go at a fast walk. I wonder which was more trouble overall? Tank or horses.
there was also this method a few years earlier in Russia:

I guess so as well. What you've heard is true. But it would quite sad to be driven to such extremes...

You're welcome Julian

More pics of this one here

I guess there should be enough converted half-tracks pics for a dedicated thread...

I'm not sure about the use for this one, but I believe it may be used for power line construction. Looks like it's fitted with a heavy-duty winch :
