I have read the kit barrel is too small. What replacements are out there? Any problems using them?

I bought Def model 35073 just for the barrel. I haven't built the m60 kit yet so I can't tell you how well it fits. I also bought Def models 35029 for the mantlet cover and search light.

Why buy al those sets when you could have gotten the DEF m60 conversion set and have a very nice turret with barrel and cupola plus the AFV Club track?

There is no easy solution to your problem. You could wait and hope that DEF or Legend release a mantlet-barrel set for the new Dragon M48A5, since they have not released one for the M60.

There was an aftermarket company named Division Miniature that produced a M68 barrel that could possibly fit the DS mantlet if you are planning to keep it.

Aber makes a M68 for the Tamiya Tiran, but requires modification in order to fit the M60.

The RB barrel has wrong dimensions.

The Barrel Depot M68 has the accordion for the M60A1 machined at the end.

EDIT: Found the Diviison Miniature barrel on ebay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/1-35-L7A2-M68-105mm-Metal-Barrel-set-w-Brass-ring-/323165017563

Good point! I didn't know that upgrade set existed!

The listing (and I haven't seen a blurb from Division Miniature themselves) and packaging indicates that this is an L7A2 barrel and then proceeds to indicate that it can also go on the M48 and M60.

While the M68 is developed from the L7, it's not the exact same. The primary difference is in the bore evacuator. Visually, the L7 has a raised flange on each end of the evacuator tube and the M68 does not. Now, the evacuator flange rings for the Division Miniature product are separate and can be omitted.

What I'm not sure of is whether the bore evacuator, less the flanges, is actually the same between the two weapons or are there dimensional differences that make one not a substitution for the other.

Visually, though, it's probably good enough, even if you are a bit of a perfectionist like myself.

That is why I suggested the Division miniature barrel, since the flanges can be omited and it is the barrel easier to fit to the m60 accordion mantlet.

A perfectionist would buy a decent kit and not the Dragon one.

If another kit existed. Maybe AFV Club will do one.

I had to go back into my ebay history, but Division also did a barrel set for the M48A5, likely the Academy kit (https://www.ebay.com/itm/1-35-M48A5-M68-105mm-Metal-Barrel-set-w-Resin-Mantel-/323157239764?hash=item4b3dac27d4). I used this barrel without the mantlet piece in the resin replacement mantlet from Tiger Model Designs. Worked fairly well with a little adaption. For my M60 I also used a spare Academy cupola from an Israeli M60 which fit like a glove after a little minor surgery. It's a shame that the kit needs all this AM to make it up to par (I never replaced the searchlight, just omitted it, but that needs something as well!)...
