Any recommendations on static grass applicators? These things are expensive but I think I need one! Thanks in advance for your input.

Try this.
I just got one and I'm in the process of converting it.

Hi John

This link will land you on p3 of the “Type 170 Mercedes” dio I posted here last year – scroll down to 2nd April & onto p4 to see how I used the Noch Grasmaster:

https://armorama.kitmaker.net/forums/254715&ord=&page=3

See also this site’s Home page under Features “Trials & Errors”, that too was all Grasmaster. As you say it’s not cheap so you’d need to use it a lot to justify the expense, but it works great and in the right hands would look even better than my efforts. One caution would be that 1/35th scale is really pushing it (and other types of applicators) to its limits in terms of grass length, it’s best suited to Railroad & braille scale dios.

I’m not sure about the budget item alternative Tom suggests, it’s worth exploring - you haven’t got much to lose after all, but if it doesn’t work out I’d definitely recommend the Noch.

Thanks guys! With my skill level making my own probably not a good idea. Might electrocute myself! So I.m still looking and comparing commercial models. The Noch is the most expensive and I will more than likely purchase a less expensive brand.

Again, many thanks

I bought the economy model by Grasstech from Micro Mark - under $ 40.
Works well enough for me but this is my first experience with static grass - make sure you check the battery size as the package on mine called for D size when in fact it uses AA

Cheers - Richard

Hi, Richard. I considered the model you have but several reviews talked about how easy it is to get a shock. So be careful!!

If the sifter on the applicator is a metal wire strainer, and you happen to touch the ground pin (or nail), you will receive a small flash and shock. More startling than painful!

I second what NEO linked to.

I bought one of those Bug Zappers at Harbor Freight for $4.99.

Works like a charm.

As far as the zapping? Yes, it will arc if you touch the basket to the nail. No, it won't hurt you. The particular model I have takes one AA battery. Just one. Couldn't believe it. Anywho, try not to have anything fragile-models, whatnot, on your base when applying. The shock will be enough to startle you, causing you to damage them.
