Very nice, although you unnecessarily bothered with the engine painting, as it is a gasoline engine of the original M113, and by the time MERDC camouflage pattern was introduced they were all gone from service, replaced with diesel engined variants, like M113A1

Yep, I knew that so I just used it as practice for painting and weathering. Will come in handy for other projects. Engine won’t be seen again.

Just one question though - why is 2nd Infantry Division commander in a 1st Armored Division track? Any story behind that?

Tracks are from Model Kasten and are really great, stencils are from Archer and again a great bit of kit. The Tie downs were to say the least a real challenge, took a couple of days on and off, this was my lockdown build.

The woodland camo for the figures was done using decals from Crossdelta, again the stock Tamiya figures from the kit modified.
Hornet Resin heads used.

Impressive work! I really like it!

Love this, it was I think my first kit I ever built. Looking at yours I want to build it again. What colours did you use on the M113 I want to steal them

Fantastic work. I hope to be at that skill level one day.

So the colours used were Hataka orange line lacquer paint set for MERDC. I’m a big fan of MRP lacquers and thought these would behave the same, they are good but not as good as MRP. I suffered from tip dry but overcame it with the Tamiya lacquer retarder.

The build was a nostalgic build, I too built it as a kid back in the early eighties and wanted to have another crack at it. I could of bought the Academy kit which is more accurate or paid a boat load of cash for the AFV Club kit but that wouldn’t of given the same enjoyment. Hence the petrol engine and other inaccuracies that I overlooked. This was a trip down memory lane for me.

Thanks Dan, was hoping for some strange reason that you used Tamiya paints. Love the paint job looks awesome to me.

No problem Peter, I too am hoping for Tamiya to release a MERDC set, it would be nice to see it in the Lacquer range or the Acrylic. The lacquers spray beautifully, better than the acrylic range and dry in an instant. I’ll take either though.

Pawel, I cannot speak to all of the M113 series wearing MERDC and having only one type of engine, but from 1973 to 1978, my battalion at Ft Hood had M106 4.2 inch mortar carriers in the Combat Support Company; the entire section ran gasoline-powered engines.

It is absolutely fantastic! Whichever photo I look at, I find impressive works. Really great, congrats!

a few things of note:
1. Looking at the power pack, you know right away that it is a very early M113. The gas engine doesn't always mean a lot, but the gear box seriously dates it to an early time frame. The next one looks like a Turbo 400 on steriods.

2. yes there were a very few in Vietnam that were gasoline powered, but all used the mid gear box (there were three different gear boxes used, and none look similar)

3. looking at the output drive shafts, you will see an added gear box. That was known as the "water steer gear box". These were removed before shipping to Vietnam, and only seen stateside and maybe Europe. My guess is that Europe still used them, even though they really needed them in RVN.

Seafoam green didn't come around till they installed the Detroit engine. Yet it could have been a repaint of course. The gear box could have been a semi gloss O.D. or gloss white. We shipped them in both colors. I think the color variation was from the GAO verses OEM buyers. Later gear boxes were bare aluminum with O.D. engines but have seen Detroit blue and Chrysler blue as well.

I love the woodland camo BDUs. How do you get that decal to fit so well?

They were fun but the secret was Daco Red (strong) decal solution, I tried several different solutions and they didn’t touch them. Careful cutting of the decals goes a long way to helping get a good finish.

The final product is fantastic. It well looks like an award winner. When I saw those figures I couldn't figure how you shrunk people down to 1/35th scale. I then saw where you used a camo decal for the uniforms. I haven't seen the decals for uniforms before but it has made a believer out of me. Nice work and thanks for sharing with us.
