Hey Frenchy
Do you know any of the history of this tank, was it used like this during the invasion of 2003? Thanks. Nick

I know nothing about this tank, but I suppose the fitting of the ACAV armor is recent, in relation with the re-equipment of the "new" Iraqi Army with US stuff (Humvees, SUVs, uniforms....)

Another interesting thing is the uparmored civilian truck that tows the trailer (as far as I can tell, it's a Volvo..)

I'm wondering if this was restored and is now going back into Iraqi defense force service? Because it looks like its being tranported, and I don't think the Iraqi army pre 2003 would have had that turret shield like that.
EIther that or its going to a museum somewhere.

Hi Frenchy,

Thanks for the photo. Obviously a part of the new Iraqi military. I wonder what other markings if any are on this tank?

Thanks,
Gary

You can barely make out a 2nd one in the background. In my opinion it has to be part of what will try to be Iraqs tank force in their "new" military.

What a cool hybrid...might have to make one of those. Anyone know what version of the T-72 it is?

I've just made some research and here's what I have found : this T-72 could be an ex-Hungarian tank that has been transfered to the new Iraqi 9th Mechanized Division in November 2005.
Here's another pic showing one of the ex-Hungarian T-72s :

They are part of the new iraqi Army...there are "Hungarian" T-72M1's (export T-72A's) and Greecian BMP-1's (E. German BMP's that were sold to Greece who then "dontated" them to Iraq).

As you may imagine, they are also "aquiring" quite a bit of american equipment. Good news for the US Defense spare parts and training industry...

However, that is a differnt T-72 variant to model...

The Iraqi Army is also being equipped American-legacy type armor, such as an M113 variant that either closely resembles the KIFV (S. Korea) or is built on the same concept. We had a company of them on FOB Sykes by Tal-Afar. But sadly the new Iraqi army hasn't progressed much beyond the old Iraqi army as far as their concepts of proper care and maintanance for their equipment.

I hate to say it, but true...who thought Verlinden would actually wake up and do something usefull again...

But you need more than just the upper hull conversion, as I am sure you know. You also need a new turret to add to that nice upper hull.
