Egyptian SA-2

The SA-2 I tried to depict here is based on pictures I have of an Egyptian SA-2 that was captured by the Israeli’s during the Yom Kippur war. The model is the 1/35 scale SA-2 Guideline made by Trumpeter built out of the box. The model goes together well and I had no real problems during the build. The only comment I can make about the kit is that there are a few difficult to remove seam lines on the missile. Difficult as they run over details that, when sanding the seam lines will have to be remade e.g. access panels.

For the colours I used Tamiya colour. Desert yellow for the base colour of the missile and the launcher, JDF green for the green spots and a light grey for the rest of the missile. The missile was painted grey first and then had the decals added. After sealing them masking liquid was applied over the decals then the camouflage colours added. After drying the masking was removed and was washed with a wash of black/brown oil paint. The launcher was just painted in the yellow and green camouflage.

As for the weathering I kept the missile clean as this is not subject to the effects of the weather for long. The launcher was weathered more as this remains in the harsh desert climate and is subjected to sand, wear and tare and the heat produced by the missile when launched. I did the heat damage by airbrushing (a very thin) mist of Tamiya red brown over the parts that would be hit by the flame when the missile was launched. This was followed up by adding different brown ad orange spots of oil paints and blending them in to break the monotone red brown colour. To finish up I dusted the launcher with pigment to simulate the dust kicked up when the missile was launched.
