Bovington Tank Fest 2010

  • move
Bovington Tank Museum in the UK hosts an annual event that they call Tank Fest. Each year the event has a theme and this year the theme was “Meet the Desert Warriors”, and on this occasion was held over a glorious June weekend (who said "it’s always raining in the UK?"). This years Tank Fest was supported in force by various units of the British Army as usual, and just as with the museums exhibits the British Army allow the general public to get up close and personal.

The Tank Fest weekend consists of a very large number of exterior static vehicles, and a large number of displays showing some of these vehicles in action in a well designed display area, and accompanied by an informative and entertaining commentary. Around the grounds you will find a large number of period re-enactors who really add that finishing touch and human element which really make this event come alive. In the grounds there are various stalls catering to a wide number of interests from buying that must have model to BB firing ranges and just about everything inbetween.

A number of the static vehicle and those involved in the displays allow the visitors to enter and look around the interior once finished with their display, and most vehicles have people in attendance who are more than willing to converse with visitors about the vehicles. Admission to the museum is included with the event entry fee where there is a wealth of static vehicles and a number of interactive displays from learning to fire a Vickers gun to a Centurion tank cut clean in half lengthways.

The event is well organised and caters to most needs including free onsite parking for the disabled and free off site parking for the able bodied, there are a large number of fast food stalls which should cater to most tastes with a restaurant inside the museum for those wanting a sit down meal. Despite the British nations reputation for queuing on Saturday that was not the case, and was a fantastic day out.

Catering for young and old alike if you ever get a chance to go to Bovington tank museum, do so you will not regret it and will have a great and reasonably priced day out. If you get the chance to go to Bovington tank museum when the are hosting their Tank Fest you will have a fantastic day out.

Alan; It was a great day out and would have been even better if I had not been doing a 12 nightshift on Friday, however there was enough going on to keep me very much awake up until I got in the car to come home. Wayne for next years event why not post on here asking if anyone is interested in sharing petrol, I am sure someone in your area or passing through your area will jump at the chance. Sorry Andrzej Bovington may look down on the practice of taken home the exhibits, and if they didn't I want one attached to a KT.
