Beach Recovery

  • move
The Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers Museum contains a number of very interesting exhibits. The Sherman Beach Armoured Recovery Vehicle (BARV) was designed with the express purpose for the recovery of drowned and vehicles that had broken down during amphibious operations.

The BARV was a conversion of the Sherman ARV Mk1. The base chassis of this vehicle was a Sherman M4A2 but without the winch. The vehicle was designed to wade up to a depth of 9 feet. The vehicle was tested in 1943 and 21 Army Group requested 50 (later 66) with 52 were delivered for D Day.

Thank you for sharing the pictures. Anyone have scale drawings… ok, that might be asking too much

There is a book published by Crowood Press by Duncan Howarth - Scale Military Conversions. This book has a good set of plans of the BARV.

Thanks for sharing, I did not know about this conversion. The driver position must have been quite claustrophobic when underwater...
