Upgunned Ferdinand

  • move
Arkadiy came up with this up-gunned Ferdinand 'retaliatory weapon' after he first purchased a turned barrel for the Maus by RB model, followed by an Sd.kfz 184 by Zvezda. He also had an extra gun mantlet from a Dragon Jagdtiger kit.You can see this on first photo. The tank camo was based on Takoms Maus paint scheme using Tamiya paints with brush and airbrush.

Very cool idea. May I suggest that if the mantlet and barrel are unpainted primer then the back of the mantlet would also be unpainted. You might want to touch it up if it's not too hard to reach, as I think it would help the whole idea be more cohesive. Also, and this is just the engineer in me noticing things, if the Jagdtiger mantlet was being used, the factory may have torched off some of the lower lip to allow the gun to depress more. As it is, it is pretty much right at the lower depression limit with the barrel horizontal and most tanks like to sit as much hull down as possible to reduce their chances of being hit. Just a thought and it really doesn't detract from the cool idea you have going on. Regards, Paul

You might want to upgrade your engine, transmission, and suspension while you're at it. Ferdinand/Elephant engines had a bad habit of overheating and catching fire due to the weight of the vehicle. You've just added several more tons with the bigger gun and mantlet, plus the heavier ammo!

The fun thing about these What If builds. It frees the imagine to explore more creative Camo ideas. That the best part. Nice work.
