Scania is a Swedish Truck, Bus and Heavy Engine manufacturing firm formed in 1891. An interesting note is they were involved in the construction of railroad rolling stock for the Swedish State Railway. Eleven factories in five countries employ a large number of people in the manufacture of trucks, buses and heavy marine engines.
The Scania fuel efficient R series long haul truck first debuted in September 2009 and was selected as truck of the year in 2010.
Herpa released this HO model of the Scania R SZ
with stake bed 6 wheel trailer in July 2013. This exquisite model comes in a yellow orange plastic body with black and silver parts. There are two styles of mirror, six pairs of stakes and underframe rack of some sort. There is an interior in the cab and the cab tilts forward to reveal a diesel motor.
This well detailed model gave this reviewer some problems. First the trailer became unsnapped from the frame during my inspection. After several attempts to snap the two back together I decided to trim the locating tabs on one side and glue the frame and bed together. I also managed to pull off the lower grill when attempting to tilt the cab forward. Finally the tractor took a 1 meter fall to the floor. The cab, grill and chassis came apart but didnít suffer any damage. It all snapped back together, bravo.
The detail and dimensions appear to be very accurate. The trailer has the Euro six wheel configuration rather than the four wheel tandem or eight wheel configuration as found in North America.
The model would benefit from license plates and weathering.
I will put this vehicle to use on my current era Alaska Railroad.
