introduction

Archer Fine Transfers continues its almost epic process of documenting the many placard and AOS (arm of service) insignia used by UK and Commonwealth units during the period leading up to the Normandy Invasion (D-Day) right through to the end of World War II. Its latest offerings are two sets are UK & Commonwealth AOS signs, as well as Independent Armor Brigade Unit Signs (reviewed separately).

contents

Inside the usual AFT glassine envelopes are two sets of color AOS signs in three sizes good for use on most vehicles.

the review

The sheets cover a wide variety of units, including:

Armoured & Infantry Division HQ RE
Field Park Squadron RE
Light Aid Detachment RIME
Divisional Armoured Reconaissance Regiments
HQ Infantry Brigades of Armoroured Divisions
Middle Infantry Battalions
Middle Infantry Brigade Support Group, etc.

A complete list can be found here for AR77033 and here for AR77035

The printing is by Cartograf, so there is no question that the quality will be first rate.

There's not really much to review here: these markings are worlds apart better than the decals in almost any kit I've seen. They're from Cartograf, so what else would you expect? And the set includes the white bars used for units larger than a division: across the top for a corps, across the bottom for an army and diagonally for Army Groups and General HQ. These are included in the sets, something I have not found with most kit markings.

conclusion

For UK and Commonwealth modelers, these sets are essential. Kit markings are not only more-limited in scope, but also tend to be of lower quality. These really make a difference on your build, and the sharp printing will stand out even from a distance.

They certainly look the business. In the photos, the AOS signs on the left appear to be for units in armoured divisions while the ones on the right are for units in infantry divisions. The sheet of engineering unit signs (light blue) is pretty unique and very welcome. A sheet of REME, signals, HQ, Service Corps, etc., signs would be similarly useful! Nudge nudge...
