The main content of this book are the images. Each one is accompanied with a short history of the particular locomotive and information about the class and type. Compared and contrasted with American designs are an occasional European locomotive of note.
Author Ken Boyd wanted to show these amazing machines in great detail. Every seam, rod, pipe, tube, bolt - he desired to reveal it. Anyone who has tried to photograph large and dark subjects knows the challenge of unveiling detail cloaked in shadow without washing out the illuminated areas. With digital prowess, the author/photographer has created beautifully presented images of these engines, even those painted uniformly black. The subjects are marvelously presented upon a white background to lay bare detail otherwise lost in negative space.
The author also presents many scenes of locomotives in their natural habitats, setting in a yard or running on the main.
This photographic gallery is exceptionally!
ConclusionHistoric North American Locomotives
is an amazing book. The photography is incredible. I am not usually a fan of gallery books and yet this book will take its place among my prized publications. The colors are rich and the detail is spectacular. The selection of subjects are a wonderful diversity of locomotives for every taste - steam, electric or diesel, main line heavy haulers and tourist cog types, and fascinating geared types.
I have nothing meaningful to criticism about this book. I think it will be a very welcome addition to any enthusiast of locomotives past and present. I highly recommend it.
