Royal Model offers a large selection of various diorama accessory items in 1/35 scale. This review covers one of the latest releases in company's accessory line, a very useful addition for many modern-day urban dioramas: Garbage bin (809).
The set is packed in a vacuum-sealed hard cardboard box. The front of the box features an image of assembled and painted bin. The box contains a plastic bag with kit pieces and a decal sheet, additionally protected using bubble wrap.
The set includes 4 resin pieces: garbage bin, lid and wheels (2x). The cast is really good and I found no imperfections in the resin with all the details nicely delivered. The carrier blocks are large and some patience is needed when cleaning the pieces. I would suggest being extra careful when cleaning the thin handle brackets as these could easily break if manhandled. The fit of the pieces is superb and assembling the set is very easy.
The decal sheet contains a single water-slide decal. I have to admit I was expecting a red marking depicted on the box art image, however, the decal in this set is blue indicating a mixed recycling bin. Under high magnification, the decal looks absolutely wonderful, with the recycling sign and tiny lettering clearly visible. Browsing the internet, I managed to find the exact marking this decal is based upon and can thus confirm Royal Model delivered an accurate and realistic detail to their garbage bin. I do wish the set included several decals indicating different types of urban refuse, offering a slight variety to the finished bin.
The bin in this set depicts a classic mobile garbage bin, used by schools, households and businesses around the world for waste collection and recycling. Sized to 30x21x17mm, this 1/35 scale bin accurately delivers a large 240L wheeled bin, its shape and details: double angle front rail, reinforcing ribs, large handlebar, hinged lid with two lifting handles, solid tires, etc. The bin can be painted in various colors: green, blue, red, yellow, orange, grey or black for various types of waste. Often the bins are green or black, with the different color of lid indicating the type of waste.
Garbage bin (809) from Royal Model is an absolute must for anyone building modern-day urban dioramas. The set delivers a 1/35 scale version of the ubiquitous wheeled garbage bin, perfectly cast and easy to assemble. Offering the lid as a separate piece in the set enables a possibility of modeling closed or opened bin... opening the bin and filling it with all sorts of urban refuse can provide a colorful focal point to vignettes and dioramas.
(EDIT: Roberto from Royal Model confirmed there are three decal options for the bins: blue, red and orange. Each kit contains one decal of random choice.)
Highs: Perfectly cast, easy to assemble. The lid is a separate piece and can be positioned opened or closed. A great accessory for urban dioramas.Lows: None.Verdict: Highly recommended.

You wonder how did this addiction start? I was a kid when my dad broght home a 1/72 Concord airplane; we built it together as well as couple of other airplanes after that. This phase was just pure fun: glue, paint, decals in no particular order... everything was finished in a day or two. Then I disc...
