ShowroomMercedes-Benz G-Model, Yellow Olive Magno
is a new HO - 1/87 model from Herpa
. This model, Item 420488
, is one of 620 Mercedes-Benz models currently catalogued by Herpa
, who tells us:
New type! In February 2018, Mercedes-Benz presented its new G-model. With long wheelbase, interesting details like chromed wheel covers in the rear as well as embossed radiator struts in polar white and obsidian black metallic, it is now realized in detail by Herpa in the 1/87 scale.
The AMG rims are new to the current G-Class in the Herpa range. The multi-spoke rims are painted in fine silver.
Herpa worked with MB and this is a licensed product, as shown in the hologram on the box.
Mercedes-Benz commenced this design in 1972 and production began in 1979. A major redesign occurred in 1990, with several modifications since then.
This 2018 version is available in four (4) models, each with more horsepower, torque, and other performance and comfort accouterments.
Herpa assembled this model at the factory. There were no optional parts to attach. Herpa models generally feature cleverly designed snap-together assembly.
Molding is Herpa's typical high-quality. I found no flash, sprue removal burrs, or other molding flaws. Surface detail consists of raised or recessed lines, as appropriate. Molding is crisp. The tires are a hybrid rubber-plastic. The window material is clear, distortion-free clear plastic.
This model is well packed in Herpa's red box. Inside, the model is secure in a form-fitted cradle.
The tires feature basic tread detail along the toe. They fit around plastic AMG rims.
I don't know what the underside of a G-Klass looks like so I refer you to the photos as to its accuracy and authenticity.
Riding above the former is a smooth body with fine detail. It appears that the side mirrors are separately applied, as is the spare tire.
Herpa uses clear lenses for the headlights and tinted clear lenses for brake lights and signals. Not in the close-ups that the front fender lights are raised. They, too, appear individually applied.
The grille and louvers are crisply defined, even those below the front bumper.
Inside the passenger compartment is a nice set of simulated leather seats. The driver has a steering wheel, console, and dashboard. Even closer inspection reveals a separately applied rear view mirror! If a modeler desires to put figures inside it, the car can be disassembled. Care should be exercised.
Inside and out, Herpa's detail is top-notch.
Finish and Markings
This model features a high-quality finish. Glossy and opaque, without obscuring surface detail. The body color, Yellow Olive Magno, looks to be painted on; chrome is also painted on except for the chrome spare tire cowl. It is beautifully plated. Herpa also paint on the MB emblems and other markings. Herpa does not use decals. Yellow olive magno is replaced with dark olive magno for 2020.
This mini G-Klass is an attractive model.
ConclusionHerpa's Mercedes-Benz G-Class
is another beautiful model of a modern SUV. It features an exceptional finish and a high level of detail - in and out. My only complaint is that Herpa ceased to mold tread detail across the tire.
This G-Klass is an attractive model. Whether you want it for display, or for incorporating into a diorama or model railroad layout, this modern MB SUV should please all modelers. Recommend.
