Oak Leaves (Laser Cut Paper)

The box and parts

This kit is a small box 2.25"x1.5". Inside is paper so it's a very light product. The box was a bit of a challenge to even get open. On the good side, your product will not get lost. On the bad side, it's a bit tough getting into the box. I used a hobby knife to wedge in the seam and gently pry the lid off.

Inside you'll find a pile of leaves all loose in the plastic box. Don't tip the box or you'll be cleaning up the mess.
There are no instructions and I don't know if it matters.

The leaves are really nice. The shape is great, they look just like the real thing. There is a really well defined stem. The overall shape is really well defined with crisp bumps and variations. The paper is light, and stiff. It's a good quality and should hold up under normal diorama construction techniques.

The quantity of leaves is pretty decent. There are roughly 220 leaves per box. Knowing that the typical method of use would be to scatter leaves on the ground in a pretty wide pattern. Wind would blow away some and there may be some on the tree, so you don't need complete ground coverage. I believe that the quantity is better in use than first imperssions when you open the box. To say it another way; I believe these will go farther than you expect.

The scale of these look about right. Compare them to a 1:1 leaf which is around the size of your hand, these are about the size of a 1/35th scale figures hand.

Overall Impression

Overall a nice product with a decent price. The visual impression is great. If you compare these nice laser cut leaves to natural herbs there really is no comparison. While the herbs are easy and cheap, the laser leaves surpass herbs quickly and wonderfully. The picture on the right shows the laser leaves on the left side of the figure and parsley on the right side of the figure.

This kit will get its share of critics that would prefer to go with cheaper easier options. My response is that adding this small detail to your diorama base is no different than adding an AM PE set to the subject vehicle. This detail is akin to upgrading the heads of the injected figures with resin ones. Just because there is an easier/cheaper way of doing leaves doesn't make it 'right' or 'different' from any other part of the project.

Model-scene supplied the kit to their US distributor Military Miniatures Warehouse who graceiously sent them to me for review.
