Volkswagen CrafterVolkswagen Crafter is a light truck chassis. Crafters are available as pickup trucks, passenger vans, box vans, and emergency vehicles. This 2006 Volkswagen Crafter truck with a trailer is now available from Herpa. This is another of the model vehicle giant’s latest modern offerings. At the time of this review Herpa issues 17 VW Crafters, 132 Volkwagens, and 61 models in Riwatrans livery.
Herpa offers the Crafter in several body styles and many colors.
RiwatransHerpa has launched a series of their freelanced transport company Riwatrans. Riwa was a previous name of the Herpa-Company.
Herpa 2006 Volkswagen Riwatrans CrafterFactory assembled and ready to go, Herpa presents an excellent model of the 2006 model Crafter. It is a window delivery vehicle with a window hauling trailer for the company “Riwa-Glas”. I believe Herpa intends it as part of their preformed house series.
It’s securely packed in a form-fitted tray that also has spaces for optional parts. The tray is held inside Herpa’s red carton with a plastic film window, and opens via tabs at each end. The model is skillfully and sharply molded, and assembled without any blemishes or flaws. Doors, hoods, grilles and access panel lines are defined with fine recessed and raised lines. The door handles are raised. Soft tires mounted on detailed hubs support the models.
Separate parts include the side view mirrors for the Crafter, and landing gear and a bogie wheel for the trailer. Also included is a baggie full of windows and frames.
Detail and TrimThe model features headlights of clear lenses. Uncharacteristic of other Herpa vehicles reviewed here, neither the Crafter not the trailer have tinted clear lenses for the tail lights. Nor were these even simulated with paint!
Inside the passenger compartment you can see a dashboard, steering wheel, gear shift, console and four bucket seats; this detail is visible through the clear windows.
Exterior detail includes optional side view mirrors. The grille sports a chromed Volkswagen emblem. Windshield wipers detail the windshield. Black chrome surrounds all windows. The service bed is the same for the truck and the trailer; it has no visible interior detail and slatted detail on the exterior.
The underside features a detailed chassis; the front part is molded detail while the chassis under the rear bed is more detailed.
The wheels are of a soft plastic or rubber slipped onto detailed hubs.
Herpa supplies a bag full of windows. These are in various sizes and shapes. The panes are represented by sharply printed framing. There is a large support frame for the largest window; it slips onto the edge of the truck bed. There is no instruction sheet showing the placement of the frame or windows.
Finish and LiveryOK, I am bias, I like red and blue together, so I think this is a great looking model from the get-go. The model parts are molded in color. The finish is smooth. Riwatrans logos are printed razor sharp. No decals are used—Herpa does not use decals.
SummaryWith sharp exterior molding, sharp printing, a detailed interior, this is a fine model.
Uncharacteristic of other Herpa vehicles reviewed here, neither the Crafter not the trailer have tinted clear lenses for the tail lights, nor where they simulated with paint. Sprue detachment burrs marr the window supports. Still, this unique eye-catching HO scale VW Crafter can enhance any modern diorama or model railroad. Recommended.
