Introduction

The Modular Integrated Communications Helmet (MICH) is a modular helmet system that provides ballistic, fragmentation, aural and impact protection, while being night vision, communications and NBC equipment compatible. Originally designed for the US Special Operations Command (US SOCOM) as a replacement for the PASGT helmet, MICH is currently the standard issue combat helmet system within US Army units. The Marine Corps did not adopt MICH, instead replacing their PASGT helmets with a new Lightweight Helmet (LWH).

The MICH is smaller and lighter than the PASGT model, offering greater situational awareness and less obstruction of the wearer's vision. MICH system uses a new type of Kevlar providing improved ballistic protection as well as a pad/four-point retention system presenting greater impact protection and comfort for the wearer.

Live Resin is a Russian aftermarket company, specialized in producing amazingly detailed weapon and accessory sets in 1/35 scale. This review deals with one of Live Resin helmet sets: US Army ACH/MICH helmet with cover (LRE-35024).

Review

The US Army ACH/MICH helmet with cover set is packed in a zip-lock bag and safely secured between a firm cardboard backing. The CAD box art on the front displays all the parts included in this kit, while the one on the back lists Live Resin offerings which can be used to upgrade the basic MICH configuration: US Army ACH/MICH helmet accessories set (LRE-35025), US Army NVG PVS 14 Monocular (LRE-35026), US Army NVG PVS Binocular (LRE-35027) and US Army AN/PRC-148 MIBTR (LRE-35029).

The set consists of 24 parts: 6 helmets, 6 goggles, 6 goggle covers and 6 NVG PVS mounts. The grey resin looks really good and I found no imperfections in the cast. There are some super-thin resin flash residues on NVG mounts, but these can be easily removed without damaging the details.

The MICH helmets supplied in this set are depicted with a helmet camouflage cover, an elastic band around it, two straps on the rear to keep protective eyewear in place, and a night vision device mounting bracket on the front. Also, all helmets in this set are designed to accommodate ESS Profile goggles. ESS Profile is a low profile, night vision compatible tactical goggle system widely used throughout US Army. Extra thick polycarbonate lenses offer excellent ballistic protection and 100%UV filtration with optimal combination of anti-scratch coating on the outside of the lenses and anti-fog coatings on the inside. ESS Profile features a full perimeter ventilation and filtration system that minimizes lens fogging and filters airborne particles and dust. Face padding increases comfort and fit. Goggles are usually covered both to keep the lens scratch free and eliminate unwanted reflection.

The MICH helmets in this set are sculpted in 2 slightly different configurations (3 helmets for each configuration). One helmet configuration in this set is fitted with carabiner and MS2000 Strobe Beacon Signal Light secured to the helmet with elastic band, while the other configuration features Norotos Strap Clip System. The Strap System enables secure NVG attachment to helmets not drilled for NVG shrouds and includes a nylon strap with ratcheting tension device that adjusts the fit to accommodate all helmet shell sizes.

The characteristic shape of MICH helmet is represented well in this set. Helmet covers are rendered very nicely and the small details like hook & loop fasteners and button holes look great. This kit supplies ESS Profile goggles (6x) and goggle covers (6x) as separate pieces. Goggles should be positioned to connect to the goggle strap sculpted on MICH helmet and also fit snuggly onto figure's head. The task is not as difficult as it may sound... after some dry-fitting, I got a really nice result using one of Live Resin heads. The goggle cover, when not in use, is usually worn on the side of the helmet, secured to goggle strap. NVG mounts (6x) depicted flipped up are also supplied as separate pieces. The NVG mount assemblies fit well to their corresponding place on the MICH, while the helmet itself fits precisely to all US Army Head Sets available from Live Resin.

Conclusion

Live Resin released number of different sets featuring ACH/MICH helmet in 1/35 scale. The kit reviewed here (LRE-35024) features 6 MICH helmets in 2 slightly different configurations; 6 ESS Profile goggles, 6 soft goggle covers, and 6 night vision mounts are included as separate pieces. The resin cast is perfect with well defined and accurate details. Combining this set with other Live Resin helmet accessories provides everything possibly needed to "pimp up" the MICH system.

You wonder how did this addiction start? I was a kid when my dad broght home a 1/72 Concord airplane; we built it together as well as couple of other airplanes after that. This phase was just pure fun: glue, paint, decals in no particular order... everything was finished in a day or two. Then I disc...
