Herpa releases the new Audi A1 Sportback with five doors and a distinctive design in black and glacier-white metallic. It has remarkable interior detail.
Audi A1The Audi A1 (internally designated Typ 8X) is a supermini-class car launched by Audi at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. The A1 is designed to compete with the Mini, and Alfa Romeo MiTo. In November 2011, Audi announced the A1 Sportback model. This is a 5-door variant of the A1, identical in external dimensions, but with seating for five and slightly more interior space.
Herpa Audi A1® SportbackThis new model type is joins 135 other Audi models by Herpa. The model is fully assembled and packed in a light plastic form-fitted tray secured in a light plastic box.
I found no flaws in the molding or assembly. The exterior features fine recessed lines for doors and hoods and panels. The tires have no tread detail except for the very edges.
DetailingIndividual clear lenses simulate the headlights and tinted lenses simulate the tail lights.
Separate side view mirrors are attached. Soft plastic tires encompass detailed rims.
The beige interior is very impressive, featuring bucket seats, the steering wheel, console, rear-view mirror, stick shift and dashboard detailing. The rear view and side mirrors lack reflective surfaces. It is easy to see through the clear windows.
Only basic molded detail is found on the underside.
Paint and FinishThis model is beautifully finished with a two-tone glossy schwarz / black exterior with a silber / silver roof. It is also available in gletscherweißmetallic / glacier-white metallic. Herpa advertises a soild black model but notes, "Delivered color might deviate from the photo." Under magnification I found that the silver is not 100% uniform, although I can not tell with the naked eye. A chrome Audi logo emblazons the grille and rear, and "A1" is stamp-painted on the back. These emblems and markings are sharply printed and not decals. Herpa does not use decals. The paint is thin, glass-smooth, and opaque.
ConclusionHerpa has released an impressive and beautifully decorated model Audi A1® Sportback. It has fine plastic detail and excellent finishing. It features lenses for headlights and brake lights, a detailed interior, and applied side view mirrors. Printing is sharp. Even though it lacks tire detail and underside detail, I happily recommended this model for collectors, model railroaders, and diorama makers.
