Introduction

If you’re looking for an interesting, quality building accessory for your 1/72 scale African diorama or vignette, then be sure to check out this kit from Reality In Scale.

Packaging & kit contents

Packaged in a sturdy cardboard box are four solid, highly detailed, resin castings comprised of the main building, a portion of a wall, an entrance archway and a door.
Master and painting are by Roy Schurgers.

Review

I’ve come to really like the quality of the product offerings from Reality In Scale, and this piece is no exception. Previously I’ve reviewed 1/35 scale subjects, so I was interested in seeing how well they handled 1/72 scale.

Each component of this kit is cleanly cast and well detailed with little to no flash to contend with. Minimal clean up with a sharp scalpel will do the job. The small side wall and door do come attached to resin plugs which will need to be removed and sanded flat. I find that a fine toothed saw blade made for scalpel handles works best. After removing the plug I firmly drag the edge of the piece along a piece of sandpaper taped to a flat table.

Main Building – This solid piece, and the focus of the kit, is very clean and only required minimal sanding on the underside. Featuring great detail, it has a large, wooden front door with a nicely detailed surround which boasts nice relief carving detail. Other features include wooden windows with concrete sills, and a pitted/cracked outer coating revealing the brick foundation underneath.

Side Wall – This piece is made to butt against the main building and features a similar pitted and cracked surface, with brick detail underneath. It also sports nice ornate detail along the top. This piece has detail on both the front and back surface, so you could choose which side to put forward.

Side Entrance - This piece, which butts up against the main building as well, complements the main structure and wall. I like the look of the arched header as it goes well with the arched appearance of the door on the main building, as well as the arched details on the side wall.

Door – This piece, which is to be placed in the opening of the side entrance, is nice and thin in profile and has a well detailed wood grain. I chose to model it in the open position, but if you’re going to model it closed, it was a snug fit so some sanding may be required.

In the last photo you’ll see that I placed a Revell, 1/72 scale Panzer IV (minus the tracks) next to the building for a scale comparison. Personally, I think it sizes out nicely.

Painting

After giving the parts a light primer coat, I based coated them using Vallejo acrylics. After the acrylics dried I used a combination of oil washes and oil dry brushing to enhance the details and give depth to the texture of the brick, plaster and the wood grain of the doors and shutters.

Conclusion

A nicely engineered kit with interesting architectural features and crisp detail worthy of any 1/72 scale vignette. Being that it replicates only a portion of a building, it is best suited for the back of your vignette. I highly recommended this kit.
